James Melvin Whatley, 60, of Olla, passed from this life on Thursday, May 4, 2017, in Lafayette, Louisiana.

He was born Tuesday, June 26, 1956 in Jena, to the union of James Monroe Whatley and Vera Bernice Whatley.

James was a veteran and worked in the oilfield.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 8, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with Rev. Clark Palmer officiating.

Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah Community under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena.

He was predeceased by his wife Linda Randall Whatley; his parents; and a brother, Larry Whatley.

Survivors include his daughters, Angie Whatley of Jena, and Charlotte Blackwell of Olla; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lemoine W. Reedstrom

Lemoine Evelyn Wilbanks Reedstrom, 95, of Marshall, Texas, passed from this life on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

She was born December 8, 1920 in Jena to the union of her parents, Kate and Harvey Wilbanks.

Mrs. Reedstrom moved to Houston, TX in 1942 with Humble Oil Company. In 1958 she was employed with the Spring Branch Independent School District until 1973 when she and her husband, Charles, started the family businesses, Computer Assistants and Compass Micromation.

In 1993, she and Charles visited the Holiday of Lights in Marshall, TX and decided not to leave but to make Marshall their home.

Lemoine was affectionately known as Hon, Moinster, Mom, friend, sweetheart, and Muppy by all. After 95 years of life, 68 of which she was the wife of Charles D. Reedstrom, she was called home by her loving Lord Jesus.

During her long and blessed life, she raised two children, and always had dinner on the table at 6 when Charles got home. She told her daughter that she always had something baking when they got home from school so the house would smell good.

She belonged to two Houston Sewing Clubs “The Stitch and Bitch Club” and “The Ladies Uplift Society” and GRITS (Girls Raised in the South). She loved sewing, making doll clothes, quilting, crossword puzzles, ceramics and watching birds.

She was a scout leader, substitute teacher, and church bulletin proof reader for years, as she laughed and said when I wasn’t working.

She was part of the United Methodist Women in Marshall, the Harrison County Historical Commission, the Depot restoration.

Mrs. Reedstrom was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Kathryn Wilbanks Watts; and her two brothers, Dan Wilbanks and Sam Wilbanks.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Reedstrom; her daughter Suzanne Reedstrom Kreklow; her son, Charles Dan “Chuck” Reedstrom; and their two sons, Richard and Kirk, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A simple graveside service to bring Lemoine home will be held at Nolley Memorial Methodist Church Cemetery in Jena at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Slater Blade Smith

Slater Blade Smith, 21, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Thursday, May 11, 2017, in Jonesville.

He was born Wednesday, June 7, 1995 in Pineville.

Slater was an avid outdoorsman who loved baseball, fishing, and hunting and he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 15, at the Heard Cemetery of Manifest with Rev. David Poole officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville.

Survivors include his mother, Mandy Butts and husband Joey Bordelon of Jonesville; father, Josh Smith and wife Amber of Manifest; two brothers, Joshua Bordelon and Tristan Bordelon, both of Jonesville; eight sisters, Kassidy Gunn of Jonesville, Taylor Bordelon of San Antonio, TX, Taylor Smith and Alana Smith, both of Manifest, Shianne McCarthy, Haily Morace, Huntley Williamson, and Madison Coldiron, all of Jonesville; maternal grandparents, Daniel and Margaret Butts of Jonesville; paternal grandfather, Donnie Smith of Rosefield; paternal grandmother, Susie Connor and husband Earl of Jonesville; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Pallbearers were Chevy Book, Jason Butts, Ethan Butts, Tristan Bordelon, Gavin Joy, Christian Book, Jonathan Day, and Cully Hudnall.

Survivors include his mother, Jennifer Robinson of Olla; his father, Bennie “Lyn” Banes (Lori Whatley) of Urania; maternal grandparents, Joanie Randall (Rex) of Olla; paternal grandmother, Betty Banes; maternal great grandparents, Alvie Snody (Isabel) and Melba Deville (George); one son, Karrson Andrew Parsley; daughter, Addilynn Ruth Robinson; four brothers, Christian Crafts, Michael Banes, Marcus Elkins and Harley Stroud; and five sisters, Chelsey Carter, Whitney Crafts, Tessa Banes, Brittany Banes, and Kaitlin Elkins.

Mavis Catherine Harp Steen, 98, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, May 14, 2017, in Jena.

She was born June 29,1918 in Grayson to the union of her parents, Fred Clark and Angie Irene Cloyd Harp.

Mrs. Steen was a school teacher and taught for many years in the LaSalle Parish School System. She was a member of Nolley Memorial United Methodist Church in Jena.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 18, at Nolley Memorial United Methodist Church in Jena with the Revs. Truman Stagg, J. Roddie Taylor and Amanda Carpenter officiating.

Interment will follow in Nolley Memorial Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don H. Steen; her parents; a son, Fred B. Steen; and a sister, Carlotta Harp Thomas.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Steen Permenter and husband Paul of Tyler, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the chapel of Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home and Thursday from 11:00 AM until service time at the Church.

Pallbearers will be Guy Neal Campbell, Keith Tarver, Robert Terral, Dale Willis, Gary Wilbanks, and William Reid.

Honorary pallbearers are the Elsie Seals Sunday School Class, The LaSalle Squares square dancers, Kennon Daniels, Roy Breithaupt, Tim Mitchell, and Randy Welch.

William Leonard Benson, Sr., 82, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at his residence.

He was born August 28, 1934 in Clarks to the union of his parents, Elton Marion and Katie Lee Rietzell Benson.

Leonard was a truck driver for the LaSalle Parish Police Jury.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Jimmy Keene and Terry Doughty officiating.

Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fred Marion Benson; and sister, Mary Jane Goodwin.

Aubin Ray Feazell

Aubin Ray Feazell, 76, of Bossier City, passed from this life on Thursday, May 18, 2017, in a Shreveport hospital following a brief illness.

He was born June 5, 1940 in Athens to the union of his parents, Lawrence and Beatrice Davidson Feazell.

Aubin Ray retired from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. He was an engineer technician, and attended Elm Grove Baptist Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 22, in the chapel of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Shreveport with his son, Dr. Rick Feazell, and grandson, Colin Feazell, officiating.

Interment followed at 1 p.m. in the Hurricane Cemetery in Athens under direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home of Shreveport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lareta Feazell, Inez Thompson, O’Neal Anderson, Ruby Gathright, and Peggy Ramsey; brothers, James Feazell and Arvil Feazell.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Feazell of Bossier City; two sons, Rick Feazell and wife Shelle of Jena, and Scott Feazell and wife Charlene of Jamestown; two step-daughters, Kim Brown and husband Charley of Shreveport, and Paula Snowden of Copper Cove, TX; one brother, Charles Feazell of Katy, TX; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Charley Brown, Jonathan Cutrer, Mike Lewis, James Anderson, Dennis Spearman, and Colin Feazell.

Lovida Miller Fife, 93, of Tullos, passed from this life on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Hardtner Medical Center in Urania.

She was born July 8, 1923 in Urania to the union of her parents, Willie and Edna Fife.

Mrs. Fife was a homemaker, a retired florist, and a retired food nutritionist with the school system. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Olla.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Rev. Scott Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pineville under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Homer Fife; two daughters, Irma Fife Terral and Evelyn Fife Keene; her parents; and brother, William Dewey Miller.

Survivors include her son, Darwin Fife and wife Tamie of Tullos; grandchildren, Cynthia D. Keene of New Braunfels, TX, Harold Mark Keene of Pensacola Beach, FL, Julian Terry Keene of Jena, Richard Ernest Keene of Fort Worth, TX, and Tonya Michelle Fife of Jonesville; great-grandchildren, Brianna Keene, Markio Keene, Gabrielle Liberto, Ashley Keene, Brayden Keene, Barrett Keene, Victoria Pittman, and Zak Keene; and great great granddaughter, Aleigha.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

James Fount Price, Jr., 71, of Summerville, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe.

He was born July 8, 1945 in Oakdale to the union of his parents, James Fount Price, Sr. and Fern Cudd Price.

Fount was a lifelong cowboy and a rodeo producer for many years, as well as being employed in the oilfield for many years.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 18, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Bill Jackson and Todd Norris officiating.

Interment followed in the Taylor Chapel Cemetery in the Summerville Community under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katherine Sue Smith; and nephew, Lamar Fannin.

Those left to cherish his memory include Lottie Switzer; children, James Crooks and wife Becky, John Crooks and wife Jenny, Jeff Crooks and wife Cindy, Amanda Price and fiancé Lyle Parker and Wesley Switzer and wife Tammy; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two sisters, Carolyn Rose Fannin and husband Lester and Mary Price.

Wilber Edgar “Eddie” Taylor, 72, of Winnfield, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

He was born Wednesday, March 21, 1945 in Natchez, MS, attended Laurel Heights Baptist Church and was retired from Franks Logging. He loved fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield with the Revs. Arthur Robinson and Wallace Ingles officiating.

Interment followed in the Zion Hill Cemetery in Tannehill under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otha and Octavia Coleman Taylor; wife, Chloteen Newsom Taylor; brothers, Tommy Taylor and Lonnie Taylor.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Jewel Inez Norris Taylor; children, Glen Taylor and wife Kim, Brian Keith Taylor and wife Michelle, Carolyn Roy, Debra Hill, Brenda Smiley and Stacey Ferguson and husband Keith; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Cockerham and husband J.W.; and sister-in-law, Flora Stringer.

Mrs. Breithaupt was a Registered Nurse at the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena for many years. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 27, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Minister Evelyn Thompson officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Breithaupt; her parents; and a sister, Alphee Mae Joubert. Those who are left to cherish in her memory include her son, Larry Romero and wife LeNette of Mangham; daughters, Lynn Webb and husband Mark of Monroe, and Carole Moreau of Jena; brother, James Aaron Joubert of Jena; sister, Margaret Bonin of New Iberia; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Willie Barber; infant daughter, Tammy Teresa Barber; son, Eddy Joseph Barber; mother, Idell Chudon Ponds; step father, Otis Ponds; and father, Lem Breland.

Those left to cherish in her memory include her sons, Michael Barber and wife Cindy of Trout, and Curtis Barber and wife Christina of Pollock; sister, Bea Breland of Pollock; half sister, Susan Breland and son Justin of San Antonio, TX; five grandkids, and six great grandkids with two on the way.

She was born July 13, 1932 in Clarks to the union of her parents, Herbert May and Odelle Ferguson.

Mrs. Bradford was a homemaker who dedicated her life to her family, as well as an avid genealogist.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 2, at Crossroads Baptist Church, with Rev. Jimmy Keene officiating.

Interment followed in the Hailey Cemetery of Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Willie Bradford; grandson, Thomas Webb Bradford; parents; brothers, Foy May, Everett May, and Robert Kidd May; sisters Marjorie Fulton, Odelle “Doody” Jones, Lenora Howell, Elva “Duncan” Otwell Massingill, and Rose Mary “Middie” Streetman.

Survivors include two sons, George Steven Bradford and wife Roxanne of Houma, and Elon Hunter Bradford and fiancé Amanda of Natchez, MS; two daughters, Sheila Diane Pons and husband Stan of France and Callie Lenora Jones and husband Allen of Belah; grandchildren, Joyce Pons Gerek and husband, Patrick, of France, John Albert Pons of France, Susan Lenora Bradford of Natchez, MS, Christopher Blase Bradford of Natchez, MS, James Benjamin Bradford Enterkin of Jena, Steven Daniel Fielding Enterkin of El Reno, OK, LeAnn Jones Dukes and husband George of Hessmer and Alanna Jones Edwards of Jena; great grandchildren, Zachary Nicholas Tarver, James Brayden Enterkin, Bryson Slade Enterkin, Rowdy Austin Randall, and Abbi Grace Edwards; sisters, Birdie Helen May May Foster and Carol May McDougald and husband Jerry; and brother, J. Calvin “Punchie” Thomas, Sr., 57, of Jena, departed this life on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

He was born December 30, 1959 in Pineville to Willie Ray and the late Matilda Thomas.

Calvin was employed at Hayes Lumber Company in Jena for more than 20 years.

He married Linda Bell Thomas on September 4, 1982 and to this union four children were born.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 27, at New Evergreen Baptist Church of Jena, Rev. Donald Sibley, pastor, with Rev. Brian Moran officiating.

Interment followed in the Webster Cemetery in Good Pine under direction of Gayden Funeral Home of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Matilda Thomas; granddaughter, Zyrreia Thomas; and a daughter-in-law, Derica Thomas.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 35 years, Linda Thomas; his children, Crystal (Fred) Thomas, Ashley (Elbert) Gardner, Calvin Thomas, Jr. and Shanice Thomas; six grandchildren, Aalandra Jaidikus, Demariyon, Amare’, Ziy’Mariya, and Zendaya; his father, Willie Ray Thomas; one sister, Karen Thomas; one brother, Johnathon Thomas; his mother-in-law, Gracie Bell; a special nephew, Juan Bell; two God-kids, Lisa Brown and Jordan Dangerfield; his aunt, Lillie Stewart; a good friend, Perry Farris; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 4, in Hair Cemetery near Jena with Rev. Johnnie Phillips officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Lavell Wilson; a daughter, Kittie Elaine Hawthorne, and son-in-law Alvie Dale Hawthorne; her parents; brother, Jack Griffin and wife Dale; and sister, Vivian Ryan and husband Edgar.

She is survived by her two grandchildren, Ty Darren Hawthorne and Tia Danielle Hawthorne Embaugh, and two great-grandchildren.

He was born July 4, 1998 in Alexandria.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carey Coates; sons, John Edward Coates and Bobby Jean Coates; brother, Bobby Lee Carroll and sister, Doris Philips.

Those left to cherish her memory include one son, Perry Coates of Manifest; sister, Margie Smith of Manifest; brother, Otis Carroll, Jr.; five grandchildren, two great grandkids and a host of nieces and nephews.

Bonita Marie Wade

Bonita “Bonnie” Marie Cramer Wade, 95, of Miami, FL passed away peacefully early morning on Sunday, May 7, 2017. She was the widow of Jena native and basketball great, Malcolm “Sparky” Wade.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 24, 1921. She played violin in the Chicago Women’s Symphony and attended college briefly before joining Pan American World Airways as a stewardess in the 1940s.

After marrying her pilot husband, she settled in Miami, FL where she raised her family. She was a devoted parishioner at Church of the Epiphany, working in the library and as school nurse from 1966-1997.

Her Catholic faith and kindness to all of the parishioners, students, and faculty was a model for everyone to follow.

She is predeceased by her husband Malcolm Sparky Wade, Sr, and parents Walter and Helen Cramer.

She is survived by her older sister Rita McCrossen; her children Patty Bennett (Ted), Malcolm Sparky “Bubba” Wade, Jr. (Jennifer), Rick Wade, and Tudi Young; her grandchildren Morgan Lang (Ryan), Crystal Reynolds (Jake), Courtney Wade, Wade Young, and Haylie Young; her great-grandchildren Jayce Lang, Peyton Lang, and Ransom Reynolds; and her beloved pets Boo and Tasha.

A funeral mass was held at Epiphany Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Kathy Waggoner, 72, of Olla, passed from this life on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

She was born October 7, 1944 in Lake Charles to the union of her parents, William and Clydean Waggoner.

She graduated from NSU in education Cum Laude. She was a devoted LSU and Saints fan and loved her family and animals.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, June 12, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla.

Interment followed in the Olla Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret Waggoner; grandson, Craig Bond; and best friend, Charlotte Underwood.

She is survived by her sons, Keith Allen and his wife Charlotte of Vinton; Trey Crichton and his wife Amy of Lake Charles; daughters, Kristi Underwood and her husband Shane of Olla, and Kerri Knight and husband Danny of Olla; grandchildren, Brandon Allen, Jerra Ates, Lindsey Knight, Michael Knight, Samantha Guidry, Madalyn Allen, David Austin Wallace, Christopher Allen, Daniel Allen, and Richard Crichton; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Rodney Andrews, Johnny Dugan, Richard Finlay, Jr., Michael Knight, Tyler Delrie, and Danny Guidry.
