Herschel Hudson Green, 84, of Jena, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born April 13, 1929 to William Huttie Green and Myrtle Rodgers Green of Shilo, LA. Herschel’s life ministry was filled with giving to and inspiring others as he touched more lives than can be counted. He spent more than 50 years teaching at the high school and college levels. Herschel completed his bachelors and masters degrees at LSU and his doctorate degree from OSU in Agriculture Education. Herschel was ordained as a Baptist deacon in 1969 and licensed as a Baptist minister in 1978. His joy in life was teaching and ministering to everyone whose paths he crossed, spending time with family and friends, and reminiscing about simpler times spent riding horses and farming. Services were held at the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, with the Revs. Dominick DiCarlo and Byron Gray officiating. Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Mildred Green. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Glenda Brooks Green of Jena; two daughters, Karen Falke and husband Tim of Central, LA, and Karla Barber and husband Craig of Jena; one son, Hudson Green and wife Desiree’ of Denham Springs; six grandchildren, Justin Sloan, Jessi Stapleton, Trey Carpenter, Trista Green, Sterling Barber, and Brody Barber; six great grandchildren, two step grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Justin Sloan, Luke Stapleton, Trey Carpenter, Bobby Wilson, Wendell Wilson, and Sterling Barber. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Coveington, Brody Barber and the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Jena.
