Addie Mae Williams Vantree Lewis, 97, of Jena, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 30, 2019 in her residence.
She was born June 4, 1922 in Sicily Island to the union of her parents, Rev. Johnnie Williams and Annie Bell Cook Williams.
As a child, she attended the St. Stephens Baptist Church of Vidalia, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Her father was pastor of the church, and she accepted Christ at the age of 17.
In 1949, Mrs. Lewis moved to Jena and became a member and Choir President of L&A Baptist Church in Good Pine. In 1980’s, she moved back to St. Stephens Baptist Church, and in 2017, she became a member of New Evergreen Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Mission department.
She received her elementary education at Vidalia, graduating as valedictorian of her class. In 1968, she continued her education at Huey P. Long Trade School, studying bookkeeping. In 1970, she attended Rod Brady Trade School, where she studied nursing. In 1972, she attended LSUA where she studied general studies.
Over the years, Mrs. Lewis was employed at the Jena Post Office, Jena Cleaners, Belden Wire and Cable, LaSalle General Hospital, La-Salle Nursing Home, Golden Age Nursing Home, Walmart, and Gayden’s Funeral Home. During her life, she was engaged in several entrepreneurial pursuits including farming, restauranteur, seamstress, carpenter and land holder. She officially retired at age 93 after working for 81 years.
During her life, Mrs. Lewis was active in civic and community service, including serving in the Order of Eastern Star Rosewood Chapter No. 65 in Vidalia.
A celebration of her life was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Nolley Memorial United Methodist Church in Jena with Pastor Greg Oliver, Sr., of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Shreveport, officiating.
She was laid to rest in the Webster Cemetery in Good Pine under direction of Gayden’s Funeral Home of Jena.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emanuel Leonard Lewis, Sr.; three sisters, Annie Cook Wainwright, Mary Cook, and Edith Gudeman; three brothers, Albert Cook, Johnny Williams, and George Williams; and one grandson, Leonard Lewis.
Left to cherish her memories are seven children, Shirley Joyce Lewis Henderson of Baton Rouge, Delinor L. Vantree (Gwendolyn) of Hampton, VA, Charles Wesley Lewis (Amy) of Baton Rouge, Emanuel L. Lewis (Janice) of Jena, Patricia A. Hill of Mesquite, TX, Jewel F. Johnson of Jena, and Addie L. Mills of Jena; one sister, Gertrude Williams Cooper of Los Angeles, CA; nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and a host of neices, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Active pallbearers were Jacoby Ceasar, Kendedrick Hill, Andre Jones, Ahmad Norl, Kunta Walker, and Codarius Vault.
Honorary pallbearers were Charles Dorsey, Brandon Gibbs, Taylor Green, Haze Harrison, Steve Kendrick, Tom Kendrick, Ben Reid, Barry Williams, and George Williams, Jr.
