Gary Dell Tucker, 74, passed from this life on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was born September 11, 1943. Gary Dale loved his family and his grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 6, at Heard Cemetery at Manifest with Pastor Bobby McGuire officiating. Interment will be under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Coplen; biological father, Lee Dell Tucker; Dad, James Coplen; one niece, “Ronnie Sue”; and step daughter, Cheryl Ford Byrnes. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Gloria Tolbert-Tucker; son, James Tucker; daughter, Amanda Allison of Aimwell; stepson, Sherman Ford of Sicily Island; siblings, Cindy Baltes and husband John of Ft. Wayne, IN; Carren McKay, Jimmie, Linda and husband John, Jean and Modean, Ronald Coplen and Michael Coplen all of Missouri; grandchildren, Ethan, Chase and Hannah Wiley; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will be the Navy Honor Guard.

Violet Entrekin Smith

Violet Entrekin Smith, 87, of Jena, passed from this life on Friday, June 29, 2018, at the home of her daughter in Jena. She was born September 25, 1930 in Natchez, Mississippi to the union of her parents, Andrew and Ineta Adams Entrekin. Mrs. Violet was an active member of Nebo Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed being a part of the Pink Ladies, Quilting Grannies, and Lady’s Rook Club. She also volunteered at the Mission House. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 1, at Nebo Baptist Church with the Revs. Byron Norris and Stephen Richardson officiating. Interment followed in the Tidwell Landing Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Huey P. Smith, Sr; her parents; brothers, W. R. Entrekin and Ben Entrekin; and sister, Bertha McDaniel. Those left to cherish in her memory include her son, Huey Smith, Jr. and Lisia; daughters, Trisha Brian and Kenneth, Jeannie Paul and J.L., and Lisa Smith and Carl; ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren, Derek and Sara Brian, Conor, Jeannie Shelton, John-Wesley, Jennifer, J.T., Justin and Kayla Paul, Carley, Cydnee and Charlie, Jennifer and Gregg Edwards, Ross, Cory and Brent Floyd, Braden and Conley, Carl and Sam Smith, Lydia, Luke and Maggie, Richard and Megan Smith, Baby Boy Smith, Erica and Jared Elliott, Dylan, Cadyn, Rylan and Jaxyn, Caleb and Jeannie Smith, Autry and Julianne, Seth and Mallory Smith. Mary L. Paulk, 96, passed from this life on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the Oak Haven Community Care Center. She liked to travel. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 30, at Magnolia Funeral Home in Alexandria with Rev. Roger Toney officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Rhinehart under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Albert C. Paulk; two sisters; and five brothers. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Lloyd Coldiron, Jr. and wife Mildred; grandson, Mark L. Coldiron; granddaughter, Stacey Coldiron Monk and husband Dean; and two great granddaughters, Rebecca Coldiron and Raygen Monk.

Alice Pyles Strong, 99, of Delhi, went home to meet her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the Deerfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 21, 1918 in Bienville Parish to the union of her parents, John Pyles and Maude Smith Pyles. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, at the Dunn Baptist Church with the Revs. Bernard Duchesne, Jr. and Terry Slawson officiating. Interment followed in the Faith Memorial Park Cemetery, south of Delhi, under direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Harvey Strong; a son, Robert Earle Strong; two grandchildren, Tammie Slawson and Gene Strong; and seven siblings, Jasper Pyles, Mary Neal, Ethel Snowden, Agnes Holliday, Willie Lou Simmons, Henry Pyles and Ruby Lorraine Salters. She is survived by three children, James T. “Jimmy” Strong and wife Marianne, and Merle Curry and husband James, both of Delhi, and Sandra Sanders and husband Elton of Jena; six grandchildren, Susanne Bembenick, Lynanne Pennebaker, Teri Grantham, Susan McDowell, Eddie Thomas and J. T. Strong; 13 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jeremy Wheat, Austyn Davis, Todd Pennebaker, Jason McDowell, Jamie Weems, Eddie Thomas, Chris Bembenick, Justyn Slawson and Ben Lonadier. She was born Wednesday, September 30, 1936 in Jena, to the union of her parents, Curtis and Glaffey Dunn Lutrick. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, at East Jena Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnnie Phillips and Rick Feazell officiating. Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred F. Powell, Jr. and second husband, Edward O. Smith; her parents; a step-daughter, Wanda D. Smith; eight brothers, Pete Lutrick, Ray Lutrick, John Lutrick, Earl Lutrick, Albert Lutrick, James Lutrick, Mack Lutrick and Vernon Lutrick. Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Fred Powell and wife Mildred and Jack Powell and wife Martha; two step-daughters. Rhonda Kay Toler and husband Munchie and Sandra Gail Adams and husband Kenny; two step-sons, Roger G. Smith and James E. Dexter Darnell Savage, 23, of Marksville, and formerly of Jena, passed from this life Thursday, July 5, 2018, in a traffic accident in Odessa, Texas. He was born Saturday, February 11, 1995 in Urania. He was the son of Dexter Savage and April Anglin. Dexter was employed as a roughneck in the oilfield industry. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, at Trout Creek Baptist Church in Good Pine with Rev. Baker officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include his parents; sisters, Lexus Prudhomme (Kendal) and Alecia Velois; son, Dexter James Savage; and girlfriend, Charie Coke. Pallbearers were Vonte Wallace, Tyrome Brown, Harmon Clark, Chico Savage, Dustyn Thomas, and D’Andra Wallace.

Michael Judd Brown

Michael Judd Brown, 28, of Hebert, and a native of Jena, died on Thursday, July 12, 2018, from injuries he sustained in an accident while working on a bridge project east of Monroe. He was born April 14, 1990 in Monroe, to his parents, Michael Brown and Donna Kirl Lovasz. Michael was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. His family was everything to him. He will be greatly missed. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 16, in the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with his uncle, Rev. Timothy Kirl, officiating. Interment followed in the Hebert Cemetery in Hebert under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, T. W. and Phyllis Kirl and his great-grandparents, O. J. Brown and Annette Green. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kelly Brown of Hebert; daughter, Addison Brown of Hebert; father, Michael Brown of Trout; mother, Donna Kirl Lovasz and husband Julius of Trout; brother, Ryan Lovasz of Monroe; sisters: Jessica Smith and husband Derek of Trout and Hailey Lovasz of Trout; in-laws, Dale and Annette Clark of Hebert; and grandparents, Pam and Michael Brown, Sr. of Trout. Martha B. Bradford

Martha Bynog Bradford, 77, of Melville, went to be with the Lord at 2:34 a.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2018, while living at her daughter’s home in Jonesville. She was born in Natchitoches, and was diagnosed with cancer in February 2018. Mrs. Bradford was happy, cheerful and loved to travel. She was a faithful organist to the First Pentecostal Church of Melville and First Pentecostal Church of Starks for over 50 years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Services were held at 7 p.m., Friday, July 13, in the First Pentecostal Church of Melville. Pastor Samuel Ham officiated at the service and committal. Interment followed at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14, in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Rhinehart under direction of LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Melville. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Matthew “Matt” Spell; sister, Patsy Ann Bynog; brother, Baron Bynog, Jr; and her parents, Baron and Margie V. Leo Bynog. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Ray Bradford of Jonesville; son, Wendell Ray Bradford and wife Chelly of Sulphur; daughter, Gwendolyn Bradford of Jonesville; sister, Rosemary Young and husband Jay of Grand Prairie, TX; three grandchildren, Tyler Spell, Katie Bradford and Camden Bradford. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Martha’s grandson, James Matthew Spell.

Louis T. Guinn, 76, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 7, 2018, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 22, 1942 to his parents, David and Trudie Guinn. Louis was a well-known brick mason throughout the state having built many businesses and homes. He made many friends throughout the years and was a very loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, at Community Pentecostal Church of Manifest with the Revs. Ronnie House and Brent Randall officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 33 years, Katie Guinn; one daughter, Tammie Guinn; infant baby; two brothers, Edward Guinn and David Guinn, Jr.; and two sisters, Reba Ann Guinn and Milva Faust. Survivors include one son, Leland Guinn; one daughter, Sherry Randall (Clint); one sister, Glenda Harrell (Charles), all of Manifest; grandkids, Jada and Landon Guinn, Jilliane Balthazar (Michael) of Pineville, Brandon Randall (Chrissy) of Creola, Steven Randall (Katie) of Sandy Lake, Emily Randall of Manifest; great grandchildren, Miss Tessa Randall, Michael Balthazar Jr., Mykel Balthazar, Milania Balthazar, Christian Randall and Beaux Randall; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Julia Mae “Granny” Powell, 90, of Rosefield, passed from this life on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at the Ouachita Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Monroe. She was born August 17, 1927 in Rosefield to the union of her parents, A. J. Ainsworth, Sr. and Julia Currington Ainsworth. Mrs. Powell was a member of Rosefield Baptist Church. She was a great cook and loved her family very much. She was always a joy to be around. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 14, at Rosefield Baptist Church with the Revs. Bubba Tucker and Ricky Gresham officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. She was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Powell; her parents; brother, A. J. “Pete” Ainsworth, Jr.; sister, Berta Faye Esters; grandsons, Phillip Allen Powell and Joshua Robert Powell. Survivors include her sons, James W. Powell and wife Cheryl, Jonathan A. Mariette is survived by her husband, John; sister, Michelle and husband Jimmy; sons, Robert Hamilton and wife Melissa, Ron Hamilton and wife Punkin, and John Beacom, IV and wife Ashton; six grandsons, Cody, Travis, Jesse, Stephan, Josh, and Triston; one granddaughter, Josie. Mariette was truly the best friend anyone could ask for. She was loved by all and will be terribly missed. A wake and visitation was held from 2 until 6 p.m., Friday July 13, in Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Edmond Hilliard “Bubba” Carriere, 62, of Oakland, Tennessee, and a native of Jena, passed from this life on Monday, July 9, 2018 in Bartlett, Tennessee. He was born Thursday, July 21, 1955 in Jena to the union of his parents, Harold “Bud” and Mollie Duke Carriere. Bubba was employed by Trans Canada Pipeline. He was a 1973 graduate of Jena High School. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 13, in the Jena Cemetery, east of Jena, with Rev. Dominick DiCarlo officiating. Interment followed under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Alice Currington Carriere; a son, Jeffrey Carriere and wife Misty; daughter, Hillary Carriere; sister, Nora Gaspard and husband Danny; and four grandchildren, Macy, Mylie, Madi, and Auden. Pallbearers were Tommy Lutrick, Pete Jones, Austin Jones, Kyle Clark, Nickie Currington, and Tim Burris.

Alton Nichols

Alton L. Nichols, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. He was born on May 15, 1935 to the union of his parents, Clarence and Verdia Nichols. Alton graduated from Central High School at Larto in 1954. In 1955, Alton earned a Mortuary of Science diploma from Commonwealth College of Sciences in Houston, TX. That same year he attained the designation of Professional Embalmer and was employed as a Mortician-Funeral Director at Hammer Funeral Home in Lake Charles. After twenty four years at the funeral home, he joined the Calcasieu Parish Assessor’s Office as a deputy tax assessor retiring in 1997. Alton was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Greater Lake Charles. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to cook. Alton married his high school sweetheart, Euna Vee Wiley on August 12, 1955. Their union lasted over 62 years. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14 at Larto Baptist Church with the Revs. Lloyd Trisler and Kenneth Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Pease Cemetery under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, William J. “Nick” Nichols. Survivors include his wife, Euna Vee Nichols; daughter, Cynthia Hoskins (James); granddaughter, Joni Lane (Lee); great grandchildren, Clementine, Joseph and Halee; his beloved Yorkie and faithful companion, Clover; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

Tristen Eve Bodie

Tristen Eve Bodie, 13, of Anacoco, passed from this life on Wednesday, July 11, 2018.
She was born January 25, 2005.
Tristen was a student at Hornbeck and a member of the Hornbeck basketball team. Tristen enjoyed running, swimming, and shopping. She had many friends and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Tristen was full of life and never met a stranger. She would offer a hug to anyone who she thought needed it.
Services were held at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 14, at Anacoco First Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnathan Crist and Allan Hatten officiating.
Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hornbeck under direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Sharon Gale Madeley.
Left to cherish their memories of Tristen are her parents, James Bodie and LeAnn Parrott; brother, Gabriel; sisters, Skylar, McKinley and a special little girl, Gabbie; grandparents, Gervis Parrott, Lois Parrott, Vonnie Parrott, Tony Vernich, and James Potter, Sr. and wife Denise; her extended family and a ton of friends.
Pallbearers were Shawn Marshall, Dale Parrott, Joey Parrott, Matt Killian, Trinity West, and Billy Don Nugent.

Claudine G. Coon

Claudine Godwin Coon, 93, of Winnfield, departed this life on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at her home in Winnfield after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 4, 1925 in Jena to the union of her parents, Claude and Cora Godwin.
Her life was one of quiet but loving Christian service to her family, church and community.
Claudine was a teacher for several years before her children were born, and dedicated the last 30 years of her work life to Laurel Heights Baptist Church in Winnfield. She also devoted countless hours of service to the Christian faith, Laurel Heights and to the Winn Baptist Association WMU, touching many lives in a loving Christian way over the years, continuing to teach Sunday school until she was 90 years old.
When she wasn’t busy with service to others, Claudine enjoyed sewing and quilting, and was a member of the Kisatchie Quilters for many years. She also loved the old fashioned arts of canning and preserving, and exhibited the fruits of those labors in the Winn Parish Fair for many years, even winning the honor of exhibiting her jellies, jams and preserves in the Louisiana State Fair on several occasions.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 21, at Laurel Heights Baptist Church in Winnfield.
Interment followed in Bolton-Teague Cemetery on Hwy 501 in Winn Parish.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William Marvin “Bud” Godwin; and her sister, Louise Godwin Burnett.
She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 67 years (three weeks shy of 68 years), J. B. Coon; her daughters, Margaret Coon of Winnfield, and Mary Lou Blackley of Shreveport; her son, Bill Coon (Karen), of Universal City, TX, and their two children, John Hicks (April), of Sylvia, NC and Allison Young (Lance) and three children, of Schertz, TX; three sisters, Rosa Mae Simmons of Shreveport, Mary Bert Arnold (Sid) of Jonesville, and Gracie LeBlanc (Gene) of Abbeville, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would appreciate donations to Laurel Heights Baptist Church, P.O. Box 467, Winnfield, LA 71483 or the Parkinson’s Disease foundation of the donor’s choice.

Dennis owned and operated Crick Refrigeration Service in Olla.

Charles Ray Little, 85, of Winnfield, passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018.
He was born Tuesday, September 27, 1932 in Melville, to the union of his parents, Robert William Little, Sr. and Addie Baker Little.
Mr. Little was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of First Baptist Church of Winnfield. He was a licensed pharmacist and owned and operated Winn Pharmacy for many years. He enjoyed hunting, traveling, and woodworking.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield with the Revs. Steven Smithson and John Holland officiating.
Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Rhinehart under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert W. Little and Wesley Baker Little; and sister, Bessie Marie Brooks.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Melba Bradford Little; sons, “Chip” Little and wife Susan, and Rob Little and wife Marianne; grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas, Hunter, Anna, and Eli; brother, Francis Perry Little and wife Johnnie; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Little; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were L. C. Barnett, Thomas Little, Hunter Little, Eli Little, John David Little, and Sam Nelson.

Gary Leon Shipley, 61, of Olla, passed from this life on Saturday, July 14, 2018, in Alexandria, Louisiana.
He was born Tuesday, November 20, 1956 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the union of Raymond Shipley and Lila Richey Shipley.
He was a member of Summerville Baptist Church.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, at Summerville Baptist Church with the Revs. Jesse Henderson, Leslie Tam and Carl Doughty, Sr. officiating.
Interment followed in the Summerville Baptist Church Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia McLendon Shipley; one daughter, Lillian Boudreaux and husband Gar; brothers, Keith Shipley and wife Billie Jean and Darren Shipley and wife Barbara; sisters, Connie Perrin and husband Daniel and Rhonda Johnson and husband Leslie.

W. “Cooter” Smith

William H. “Cooter” Smith, 93, a lifelong resident of Jena crossed over to his heavenly reward on Friday July 20, 2018, at Cornerstone Hospital in West Monroe.
Mr. Smith was born in Tall Timber, Louisiana on August 10, 1924, to the union of Arthur and Lily Coon Smith.
Cooter, as he was known to most folks, was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was self-employed, working in the agriculture business. He loved to fish and hunt and loved listening to gospel music quartets.
Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, from the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Jena with the Revs. Dominick DiCarlo and Mickey Hudnall officiating.
Interment with full military honors followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Berniece “Snoodle” Chandler Smith; two brothers, Curtis Smith and Ray Smith; and one sister, Vera Gulde.
Left to cherish his memory is one daughter, Shelia Moffett and husband Rev. James Moffett of Bastrop; grandchildren, Tonya Parker, Aimee Pearson and husband John, Sarah Cardwell and husband Chris; great grandchildren, Bryce Parker, Mackenzie Parker, Nathaniel Pearson, Ethan Pearson and Jonathan Pearson.
Pallbearers were Robert Terrell, Kaylon Randall, Tom Watkins, Scott McLendon, Charles Davidson and Fred Powell.
Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren, Bryce Parker, Nathaniel Pearson, Ethan Pearson, Jonathan Pearson and friend Wendell Wilson.

Charles Edgar Taylor, 74, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena following an extended illness.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 26, at First Baptist Church in Jena.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 27, at First Baptist Church in Jena.
Memorial donations may be made to the future education facility fund at First Baptist Church in Jena.
A complete obituary will be published in the next edition of this newspaper.
