Cindy Nugent, 43, of Trout, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, from injuries sustained in an accident near Good Pine. Cindy was a homemaker. Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, in Sanctuary Family Worship Center in Jena with Rev. Evelyn Thompson officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery near Rhinehart under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Bumgarden. Survivors include her husband and best friend, Billy Nugent; four daughters, Jaqueline and Jennifer Isbell and Katherine and Kimberly Bumgarden; two grandchildren, Maize and Isabella; her mother, Betty Bumgarden. Cindy is also survived by her club family. Pallbearers were Jason Nugent, Blake Nugent, Justin Nugent, Jacob Nugent, Darrin “Dobber” Bailey and John Steele Bailey.

Howard C. Poole, 80, of Grayson, and a LaSalle Parish native, passed from this life on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at the Haven Nursing Center in Columbia Heights. He was born in Olla to the union of his parents, W. T. and Annie Poole. Mr. Poole was a retired heavy equipment operator, and was a member of Kelly Baptist Church. He loved to fish and to watch wrestling. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with the Revs. Joe Aguillard and C. R. Martin officiating. Interment followed in the Rosefield Cemetery at Rosefield under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harrell Charles Poole; grandsons, Duncan Howard Childress and Raphael Trahan. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Green Poole of Grayson; sons, Charles Poole and wife Debbie of Kelly, Gary Poole of Columbia, Tommy Poole of Columbia, Steven Briscoe and wife Reba of Duty Ferry, and Paul Briscoe and wife Dee of Grayson; daughters, Dianne Poole Childress and husband Tony of Kelly, and Janey Poole Trahan of Grayson; sister, Elnora Huddleston; grandchildren, Aaron Briscoe, Lynn Briscoe, Joshua Briscoe, Marcus Briscoe and wife Alex, Megan Poole, Casey Poole, Michael Trahan, Gabrielle Trahan, Kristin Childress Kenworthy and husband Sloan, and Angie Boyles and husband David; and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were Ivan Green and Tom Green. Any planned memorials may be made to Kelly Baptist Church, P.O. Joel Clyde Williams, 69, of Georgetown, passed from this life on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at University Health in Shreveport. He was born September 8, 1947 in Winnfield to the union of his parents, Troy and Virgie Wyatt Williams. Mr. Williams was a self-employed logging contractor, was Baptist by faith, and a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, at Beulah Baptist Church near Georgetown with Rev. Lamar Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Beulah Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kim Williams; brother, Terry Williams; and three grandchildren, Joel Armstrong, Howard Armstrong and Dustin Henderson. Survivors include his wife, Marguariette Murphrey Williams of Georgetown; daughter, Missy Williams of Georgetown; brother, Tom Collier Williams of Shreveport; two grandchildren, Megan Armstrong and Dylan Armstrong, both of Georgetown. Pallbearers were Richie King, Bobbie Conville, Richard Mark Maxwell, Clay Maxwell, Jack Barrett and Jack Corley. Honorary pallbearers were Mark Harris, Willie D. Davis O. Young

Davis Overton Young, 34, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. Davis was born July 13, 1982 in Monroe to his parents, Davis Lin Young and Dewanna Murry Young. Davis was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was taken from this life too early but by donating his organs, he was able to give life to at least eight other people. He was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. He was preceded in death by his wife’s parents, Floyd Edward and Betty Jane Proffer; his grandparents, Spencer Young, Sr. and Lucy Young; his grandfather, Olen Overton Murry; brother-in-law, Andy Lee Proffer; sister-in-law, Marilyn Ann Brownell and nephew, Joshua Lee Proffer. Survivors include his wife, LeWanda Proffer Young; son, Thaniel Drake Young; parents, Davis Young and Dewanna Young; step-son, Dustin Allen Crain; step-daughter, Valerie Nicole Crain; brothers, Daylin Young and Chris Young; sister, Deann Aycock and husband, Johnny; brothers-in-law, Darrell Proffer and wife, Missy and Floyd Edward Proffer, Jr. and wife, Tina; sister-in-law, Melissa Baum and husband, Melton; grandparents, JoAnn and Johnny Albritton; his wife’s grandparents, Truman and Betty Proffer; a special nephew, Caleb Helfrick; and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Randy G. Thornton, 73, of Urania, passed from this life on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. He was born April 4, 1943 in Urania to the union of his parents, Willie and Mable Fouts Thornton. Randy was a truck driver for 35 years and operated a service station in Urania for ten years. He loved woodworking and horse trading. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with the Revs. Denver McBroom and Bo Prather officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Hill Cemetery near Olla under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Francille Schultz; and four brothers, Billy Thornton, Bobby Thornton, Norman Thornton, and Joe Thornton. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Holloway Thornton of Urania; son, Vincent Thornton of Urania; two brothers, W. M. “Dub” Thornton of Urania, and Melvin “Bud” Thornton and wife Diana of Olla; two grandchildren, Brandon Thornton and wife Morgan of Natchitoches, and Jessica Thornton of Urania; and one great-granddaughter, Annabeth Thornton. Pallbearers were John Thornton, Zachary Thornton, Josh Young, James Callender, Robin Thornton, and Donnie Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Moore and Tommy Driggers.

Linda Faye Tarver, 61, of Columbia, passed from this life on Friday, October 28, 2016, at the St. Francis Medical Center – Downtown Monroe Campus, following an extended illness. She was born October 12, 1955 in Columbia to the union of her parents, San Juan Tarver and Argentina America Alanize Tarver. Linda was a school bus driver for the Caldwell Parish School System for many years, she loved to grow vegetable gardens and loved to can her vegetables, and she was a spectacular cook and cooking was a passion of hers. She owned the Sears store in Columbia and worked as manager for Easy Way for many years, and then Aarons after their purchase of Easy Way, until her illness that she fought so hard and so bravely. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, in the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Bro. Chris Gainous officiating. Other speakers included Fred Hill and Jimmy Strong delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in the Burroughs Garden of Memories Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Eunice Tarver; and her maternal grandparents, Jose Alaniz and Macaria Alaniz. Survivors are her children: son, Jonathan Lee Beckley of Columbia, Catina Faye Beckley and wife Kattie of Grayson; her brother, Kenneth Tarver and wife Jeannie of Columbia; her grandchildren, Hannah Beckley of Lexington, TN and Abbie Beckley of Zachary, LA.

Melba Arlene Stapleton Ruddell, 83, of Olla, passed from this life on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Citizens Medical Center in Columbia Heights following an extended illness. She was born July 13, 1933, one of eleven children born to John Wesley Stapleton and Fannie Laura Daivs Stapleton. Mrs. Stapleton was a member of Standard Baptist Church. Services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7, from the sanctuary of Standard Baptist Church, north of Olla, with Rev. Shad Tibbs officiating. Interment followed in the Olla Cemetery in Olla under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Burle Ruddell; her parents; and by her brothers and sisters, Rudolph Stapleton, Euda Lee Stapleton, Reba Stapleton, Frances Larry, Paul Stapleton, Carroll Stapleton and Estelle Allen. Survivors include her son, Roger Corley and wife Connie of Rowlett, TX; three sisters, Betty Sharp and husband David of Olla, Virginia Ledoux of Monroe and Jo Ann Bresett of Calhoun; two grandchildren, Kelly Corley Payne and husband Bryan of Austin, TX and Roger Paul Corley of Brooklyn, New York; two great-grandchildren, Georgia and Lucas Payne.

Wesley Baker Little, 87 of Rhinehart, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 6, 2016, in Alexandria. He was born Thursday, April 4, 1929 in Melville, to the union of Robert William, Sr. and Addie (Baker) Little. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Scotty McDowell and Gary Wagoner officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bess Brooks. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Dayton Little of Rhinehart; one son, Daron Little and wife Dana of Saratoga, WY; three grandchildren, Cassidy, Riley, and Josie Little; three brothers, Robert W. “Buddy” Little, Jr., and Perry Little and wife Johnnie, all of Jena, and Charles Ray Little and Wife Melba of Winnfield. Pallbearers were Charles R. Little, II, Rob Little, John David Little, John Robert Little, Thomas Crooks, and Lawson Little.

Gene Huey Evans, 78, of Madisonville, passed from this life on Monday, October 31, 2016 at his home following a short illness. He was born in Belledeau, LA on May 11, 1938, and was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Evans of Jena, and Neze Dauzat Evans of Echo. Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Belledeau Baptist Cemetery, 1204 Hwy 114 (Belledeau Hwy) in Hessmer. Arrangements are under direction of Melancon Funeral Home of Bunkie. Gene spent his years as a transportation driver hauling building materials, automobiles, oil field equipment and various other commodities across the United States. Over his career, he logged over 150,000 miles. He truly enjoyed his many hunting trips with his grandson, and numerous lunch outings with his granddaughter. For thiry-nine years he was a resident of Jefferson Parish where he raised his children, and then he and his wife moved to St. Tammany Parish in Madisonville, thirteen years ago. He was a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, General Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp 1931, and a member of Teamster Local Union. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Diana Dupont Evans, a native of Cottonport; his three daughters, Pamela Herty and husband Gerard and Sherri Dragon and husband Darrell, all residents of St.Tammany Parish, and Gwen DaLeo and husband Brian of Jefferson Parish; and his sister, Mary Littleton and husband Jay of Polland. Gene so loved and cherished his grandchildren, Corie Dragon Johnson (Bruce), Daniel P. Dragon, Nicole DaLeo and his great-grandchild, Oliver Bendana. The family requests memorial donations be made to the La. Division Sons of Confederate Veterans (Attn: Large Flag Fund) - P. O. Box 8428, Shreveport, LA 71148-8428 in memory of Gene Evans.

Mrs. Cruse attended Olla-Standard High School in Olla and was Baptist by faith. Interment followed in the Bethel Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Pineville. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Etta White and Charlene Pentecost; brother, Earl Chevallier; son, Tommy Cruse; and great grandson, Konner Shephard Carter. Survivors include one son, Daniel Cruse; two daughters, Geraldine Shephard and Kathy Hester; 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She was born Wednesday, April 25, 1945 in Jonesville to the union of her parents, William Leroy Butts and Stevie Hardie Butts. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the Wallace Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Crain officiating. Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. Survivors include her husband, Mehl “Cub” Hudnall, Sr.; daughter, Monica Otwell and husband Ricky; son, Mehl “Cully” Hudnall, Jr.; three grandchildren, Canaan White, Dustin White, and RikkiLea Otwell; three brothers, Harold Butts, Danny Butts and wife Jane, and Andy Butts and wife Renee; and a sister, Nelda Mann. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rodney Dale Fannin; grandfather, Monroe M. Fannin; and grandmother, Carrie Pearl Francis Fannin. Survivors include his wife, Chris Elliott Fannin; son, Jacob Eli Fannin; daughter, Mackenzie Rae Fannin; parents, Dale Lamar Fannin and Ruby Lavon Erwin Fannin; sisters, Kimberly Renee Fannin Trisler and Jamie Priscilla Fannin, all of Jonesville. Toxie Joel Evans, 68, passed from this life on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at his residence in Olla. He was born March 30, 1948 in Covington County, Mississippi, the son of Palmer Evans and Myrtle Walker Evans. Throughout his life, Toxie was involved in many trades, including trapping, offshore work, and truck driving. He owned and operated Evans Logging and Farming Company. Some of his favorite past times included hunting, fishing, farming, and enjoying his grandchildren. Services were held Monday, Nov. 7 at New Chapel United Pentecostal Church in Collins, MS. with Rev. Ken Hickman officiating. Interment followed in New Chapel Cemetery in Collins, under direction of Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Mickey Evans; a step-daughter, Melanie Hall; and a nephew, Clifford Williams. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Evans; four daughters, Renee Curi, Tammy Lanham, Lachrisha Fitzgerald, and Michelle Evans; his mother, Myrtle Evans; two brothers, Jerry Wilson and Dennis Evans; three sisters, Margie Wilson, Dianne Clar, and Pam McNair; and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ray Clark, Carl Wayne, Jim Wilson, Jason Evans, Jeff Wilson, John Wilson, Clay Dunn, and Carl Barkin.

Paul Jay Zoller, 66, of LaSalle Parish, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2016, in Tyler, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born August 2, 1950 in Magnolia, Arkansas, to the union of his parents, Billy Leonard Zoller and Jolene Gale Renfro Zoller. Paul graduated from New Iberia Senior High School in 1968 and was a college graduate from Northwestern. He was well know to be a vibrant and skilled athletic student during high school and college years. Paul was an avid outdoorsman throughout his life, and worked in the oilfield for 45 years, retiring as a mud engineer. The family will have a private service. Paul was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three daughters, Sommer Zoller Paul and husband Allen, Melissa Zoller Lusco and husband Mark, and Christi Zoller Hord; five grandchildren, Michael Salvador Lusco, Anna Claire Lusco, Reid Hord, Kate Hord, and Lilly Reid Paul; two sisters, Johonna Fowler and Janet Ruth Girouard. The family asked that memorials be made to the Cliff Williams Memorial Foundation.

He was born Thursday, April 23, 1942 in Jena, to the union of Robert Granville and Annie Belle Clarke Doughty. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Pritchard Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Russell, Charles Webb and Tommy Sanson officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Theils. Survivors include his wife, Velda Joyce Sanson Doughty of Walters; two sons, Rev. Terry Doughty and wife Martha of Walters, and Robert Doughty and wife Cindy of Jena; one daughter, Susan Guice and husband Lester of Walters; two brothers, Billy Doughty and wife Annie Nell of Whitehall and Bobby Doughty of Summerville; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Larry Travis Brooks, 75, of Hebert, passed from this life on Thursday, November 17, 2016, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria following an extended illness. He was born on March 15, 1941 in Shreveport, to the union of his parents, William “Bill” Cleveland and Beatrice Martin. Travis was a United States Army Veteran having served in the military from 1959 to 1962. He married the love of his life, Billie Ruth Womack Brooks on November 23, 1962 and after 54 years, she preceded him in death by 3 months. Together they owned Brooks Lawn Service Company. He was an active member of Life Church in Columbia. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20, from the sanctuary of Life Church in Columbia with the Revs. Dean Love and Don Boyette officiating. Interment with full military honors followed in the Hebert Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother, Charlie Wood of Rayville. Tom was a forestry technician with International Paper Company and was also in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War as a Cpl. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Johnnie Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the Jena Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine Lytle; a brother, Edward Lytle; two sisters-in- law, Nancy Lytle and Odessa Lytle; nephew, Terry Lytle; father and mother-inlaw, Marion Thomas McLendon and Alma Clara McLendon; brother-in-law, Grady McLendon; and sister-in-law, Betty Tarver McLendon. Joe Hamilton LaCroix, 90 of Winnfield, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016. He was born Friday, August 13, 1926 in Utility, to the union of his parents, Claude and Rosa Hamilton La- Croix. Joe was a member and deacon of Central Assembly of God Church in Winnfield. He was retired from Allen & Allen Vending Co. with 20 years of service. Later, he retired from Kay Radio in Alexandria, having 21 years of service. Joe was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served three overseas tours of duty. Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield with Rev. Willie Beaubouef officiating. Interment followed in Young Cemetery of Jonesville under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Robbie Lamar LaCroix. Survivors include his son, Bobby Joe LaCroix and wife Betty Kay of Olla; grandchildren, Jada LaCroix of Abbeville, Rory LaCroix of Winnfield and Taylor LaCroix of Winnfield; six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Ryan Millsap, Bill Crawford, Joe Bardwell, II, Joe Bardwell, III, Leroy Hardwell and Clint McKay. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Nugent and Bobby O’Neal.

Merrell McGuffee

Merrell Delane Mc- Guffee, 87, of Columbia, passed from this life on Monday, November 14, 2016, at Ouachita Healthcare and Rehabilitation following an extended illness. He was born June 13, 1929 in Caldwell Parish to the union of his parents, Shellie Albert McGuffee and Eathel Frances Horn McGuffee. Mr. McGuffee served in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War. He was a farmer most of his life and was a member of the Sandy Bayou Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to all and will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, from the sanctuary of Sandy Bayou Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Russell and Sammy Redden officiating. Interment followed in the Rosefield Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Herbert Gathright; son-in-law, Tommy Lee Beckley; nephew, David Hughes and grandson, Phillip Allen Powell. Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years and 11 months, Betty Lee Johnson McGuffee of Columbia; daughter, Delanea Louise Beckley of Columbia; daughter, Anita Kay Powell and husband Phillip of Sterlington; son, Glendon Lee McGuffee and wife Ellie of West Monroe; son, Leland Merrell McGuffee of Columbia; granddaughter, Andrea Dailey and husband, Stuart of Sterlington; grandson, Tyler Merrell Powell of Kerrville, TX; granddaughter-in-law, Shannon Powell of Sterlington; great-grandchildren, Taylor Lee Scribner and Drake Scot Dailey of Sterlington; brother, Doyce McGuffee and wife Linda of Chatham; sister, Gloria Fuqua and husband Don of Baker; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; and his special pet dog “Pretty Boy”. Pallbearers were Phillip Powell, Tyler Powell, Stuart Dailey, Taylor Scribner, Kevin Gathright and Todd McGuffee.
