Boone Ketchens, 62, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. He was born November 3, 1953 in Jena to the union of his parents, Cyrus Boone Ketchens, Sr. and Edna Nugent Ketchens. Boone was a Baptist by faith. He lived in Arkansas for 12 years where he was a Mason and a member of Mason Lodge #418 in Salem, AR. He also worked as a motorman in the oil field and has lived in Jena for the past six years and worked as a commercial fisherman. Services will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Horace Ketchens officiating. Interment will follow in the Tidwell Cemetery in Nebo, under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. Survivors include his wife, Tina Ketchens of Jena; sons, Charles “Little Boone” Ketchens and wife Jody of Jena, Marion Blake Ketchens of Sturkie, AR and step-son, Matt Madsen and wife Jana of Kelly; daughter, Jonna Souppa of Houma; sister, Mickie Barron and husband Joe of Jena; and two grandchildren, Kaylie and Allyssa Madsen. Pallbearers will be J. T. Trahan, Wacker Pritchard, Levelle Pritchard, Peyton Pritchard, Chuck Chevallier, and Ben Whatley. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Scott and Vernon Kuhn.

Ben Frank Morris, 82, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, November 8, 2015, in Jena. He was born Wednesday, July 5, 1933 in Sandy Lake to the union of Benjamin Franklin and Josie Husbeth Morris. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at Midway Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Dave Bailey and Kevin Manuel officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah-Fellowship Community under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his son, Ben M. Morris; brothers, Jeddie Morris, J. B. Morris, Willie Price, Jim Homer Price, and Carver Morris; and sisters, Shirly Graham and Rose Ford. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Stanfield Morris of Jena; two sons, John Morris of Jena and Micheal Morris and wife Ginger of Olla; two daughters, Becky Cotton of Harrisonburg and Paula Little and husband Bill of Manifest; brother, Sam Morris of Corpus Christi, TX; sister, Vivian Brooks of Houston, TX; ten grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.

Edwin Earl Savoy, Jr., 55, of Jena, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in Baton Rouge. He was born in Jena on June 8, 1960. Earl was a self-employed tree surgeon. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 19, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Earl Savoy, Sr. and Mildred Lavern Keene Savoy; and a sister, Martha Savoy. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Parks Savoy of Jena; two daughters, Ashley Savoy and Brandi Savoy, both of Jena; two sisters, Priscilla Scott of Vivian and Sarah Wiggins of Winnsboro; one grandson, Nathan Cupit; uncle, Johnny Savoy; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mary Jane Wiles, 67, of Columbia, passed from this life on Friday, November 13, 2015, at her residence. She was born April 19, 1948 in Grayson to the union of her parents, Orval Lee and Ola Myers Wiles. Mary Jane loved arts and crafts. She loved listening to country music and spending money on her grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia with Rev. E. R. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Cross Roads Cemetery, west of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Renee Torres of Olla; one brother, Jimmy Ray Wiles of Columbia; four sisters, Paula McMullen of Columbia, Margaret Lee of Jena, Judy Lloyd of Grayson, and Patsy Poole of McComb, MS; and three grandchildren, Melissa McManus, Hailey Torres, and Emily Torres. Pallbearers were Keith LeMoine, Wesley Lee, Jr., Stacy Bird, Keith Williams, Bobby Finley, Kelly Lloyd, and Norrie Anding.

Dorothy “Dot” Crooks

Alice Dorothy “Dot” Touchstone Crooks, 92 of Jena, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 20, 2015, in Jena. She was born on Tuesday, February 13, 1923 in Millry, Alabama, to the union of John Sidney and Etta Lee Sullivan Touchstone. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 23, at Temple Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Keene and Johnnie Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the Nolley Memorial Cemetery of Jena under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Crooks; her parents; two sons, Jerry Lane Crooks and Julian Martin Crooks; brother, Delma Touchstone; and two sisters, Bertine Fenner and Mary Lee Williams. Survivors include two sons, Carlos Crooks and wife Lisa and Clay Crooks and wife Frances; three daughters, Sherry Hudnall and husband Bo, Cherry Jo Gertz and husband Jorgen and Robbin Bass and husband Jamie; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ed Williams, Jr., Mason Crooks, Blake Crooks, Josh Bass, Bo Hudnall, and Jorgen Gertz.

Trevor Henry Rogers

Trevor Henry Rogers, 24, of Enterprise, died Tuesday night, November 17, 2015 in Jena following a shooting accident. He was born on July 12, 1991 in West Monroe. Trevor had many hobbies including duck hunting, mud riding and water sports. Trevor always had a smile on his face that lit the room and brought such joy to his family, friends and coworkers that a smile would come to their faces. He worked for Noble Drilling. He was loved greatly and deeply and will be fiercely missed. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, from the sanctuary of New Ouachita Baptist Church at Enterprise with the Revs. Joe Cook and Kent Nugent officiating. Interment followed in the Rosefield Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Shayne Lewis. Survivors include his mother, Suzanne Lewis Rogers of Enterprise; sister, Lindsey Rogers Alwell and husband Bubba of Jena; grandparents, H.C. and Bessie Lewis of Enterprise; niece, Lettie Alwell of Jena; nephew, Garrett Bryan of Abilene, TX; aunt and uncle, David and Annette Ford of Delhi; cousins, Ashley Johnson, Max Johnson and Aubree Johnson of Winnsboro; special cousin, who was like a sister, Lacy Hutchins of Harrisonburg; special friend, Chelsea Thomas of Winnsboro; and a host of friends that were like family along with his numerous extended family members. Pallbearers were Tyler Myers, Jesse Vinson, Kyle Davis, Max Evans, Andrew Sones, Beau Bryan, Peyton Pritchard, Trey Stone, Chris Givens, Levi Stringer, Jacob Roark and Boyd Melton. Katherine “Kathy” Thompson Garsee, 60, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, November 22, 2105, at the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena. She was born August 9, 1955 In Forest City, Arkansas. Mrs. Garsee was a homemaker. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Joey Paul officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Gary Thompson; and brother, Ronnie Thompson. Survivors include one son, Charlie Pritchard and wife Susie; father, W. G. Thompson of Whitehall; sister, Laurie Williams; brother, Gary Thompson; and grandchildren, Cody Pritchard and Hadlie Jo Pritchard.

Otto “Paw-Paw” Slay

Michael Otto “Paw-Paw” Slay, 68, of Sicily Island, and formerly of Jena, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. He was born September 26, 1947 in Jena, to the union of his parents, Otto and Eunice Hudnall Slay. Mr. Slay was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam conflict. He served on the Destroyer USS Tattnal as a Fire Control Tech. He worked as a rig engineer for Ensco Drilling for 30 years and retired four years ago. He was a member of East Jena Baptist Church. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Tommy Sanson and Oliver Dean officiating. Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery in Jena with full military honors, under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Hazel King. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sharon Slay of Sicily Island; one son, Michael L. Slay and wife Tammy of Fairfield, TX; sister, Marilyn Rose Lutrick of Jena; and grandson, Lance Slay of Sicily Island. Pallbearers were Ricky Ferrington, Buddy Love, Jeff King, Michael Shapply, Rick Villemarette, Lanelle Masters, Matt Wilkinson and Beau Melton.

James “Ron” Ronald Sones

James “Ron” Ronald Sones, 52, of Holum, passed from this life unexpectedly on Saturday, November 28, 2015 in Holum. He was born on June 16, 1963 in Natchez, MS to the union of his parents. Ron worked as a maintenance man in upkeeping yards. He held many hobbies including working in his own yard, watching car races, hunting, especially deer, and cooking. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, at the Little Star Baptist Church near Grayson. He is preceded in death by his father, James W. Sones; grandparents, William and Bessie Cooper, Robert and Rosie Corales and Willis Jefferson Sones; uncles, Richard Malone and Eddie Malone; and his aunt, Jean Busby. Survivors include his mother, Linda Herrington and husband, James of Winnsboro; brothers, Jeffery Sones and wife Janice of Holum and Phillip Anthony Sones and wife Melissa of Grayson; sister, Darlene Neal and husband Randy of Trout; seven nieces, three nephews, numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; close relatives, Willie Mae Nugent, Lee Sikes and Faye Fatheree; and close friends, the Stout family.

Nancy Mai McCartney

Nancy Mai Whitley McCartney, 86, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at the home of her daughter in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was born on January 14, 1929 to Kenneth and Hattie Mai Williams Whitley in Nashville TN. She graduated from North High in Nashville in 1948, where she was voted “Most Dignified” and married Johnny McCartney of Urania, that same year. Mrs. McCartney was a long-time resident of Jena where she was active in the First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Town & Country Garden Club and did volunteer work at both LaSalle General Hospital and Hardtner Medical Center. She loved her family, her church family, working crossword puzzles and LSU Football. Mrs. McCartney moved last year from Jena, to Fort Smith, to be with her family where she enjoyed her great-grandchildrens’s activities, shopping and getting her nails done. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the First Baptist Church in Jena with Rev. Dominick DiCarlo officiating. Interment followed at the Pine Hill Cemetery of Olla, under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny McCartney and two sisters, Nadine McCartney of Olla and Ruth Watkins of Nashville, TN. Survivors include her Children, Pam McCartney Copeland and husband Terry of Fort Smith, AR and Larry McCartney and wife Donna of Quitman; four grandchildren, Matt Copeland of Oxford, MS, Julie Copeland Tatum and husband John of Greenwood, AR, Kristen McCartney Telford and husband Jeremy of Stillwater, OK and Karey McCartney Harrel and husband Clay of Hideaway, TX; three step-grandchildren, Ben Backus and wife Lindsay, Stephen Backus, and Caleb Backus, and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Morrison of Nashville, TN, and her brother-in-law, W. B. “Bo” McCartney, Sr. of Jena. Pallbearers were Joe McCartney, Darrel McCartney, Whitney McCartney, John Tatum, Clay Harrel and Jeremy Telford. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Williams, Clay White, Poo Walker, Murphy McMillin, Jerry Stevens, and Marty McClure.

Rev. Arnold Norsworthy

Reverend Arnold Norsworthy, 82, of Alexandria, passed from this life on Sunday, November 22, 2015, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was born February 8, 1933 to the union of his parents, Homer and Gertrude Riley Norsworthy. Rev. Norsworthy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Alexandria. He surrendered to the ministry at the age of 16 and during his life served in many churches as pastor, including First Baptist Church of Jena. He also worked at the Louisiana Baptist Convention for 16 years. Rev. Norsworthy proudly served his country in the United States Army. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Alexandria with Dr. Cliff Stewart and Dr. B. David Brooks officiating. Graveside services with burial were held at 2:30 p.m. at Zion Cemetery of Georgetown under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Alexandria.. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Ganey and husband, J. D., Marjorie Richey and husband,  Jack. Surivors include his wife of 62 years, Norma Parker Norsworthy; daughter, Janet N. Hom and husband, Ray; sister, Nomie G. Smith and husband, Gerald; and grandchild, Casey D. Hom.

James David Hall, 94, of Olla, passed from this life on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on June 23, 1921 at Crowville, to the union of his parents, J. D. Hall and Susie Hall. James was a United States Air Force Veteran of World War II and a member of the Olla Pentecostal Church. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 27, from the sanctuary of Olla Pentecostal Church with Rev. Jonathan Crist officiating. Interment followed in the Harris Chapel Cemetery near Olla, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife, Elana Hoard Hall. Survivors include his beloved wife, Faye H. Hall of Olla; his daughters, Glenda Ogg Shaw and husband Gene of Eros, and Vicky Jackson and husband John of Dallas, TX; his grandchildren, Lisa and Gene Shaw, Jr; and one great grandson: Logan Shaw.

Gloria Johnson Krause, 62, of Sicily Island, and a native of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, November 19, 2015, in Alexandria. She was born April 9, 1953 in Jena to the union of her parents, Barney and Maxine Johnson. Gloria was a member of Sunny Side Church and owner of the Snack Shack in Sicily Island. She enjoyed watching and supporting the local sporting teams, especially when they included her children and grandchildren. She always had a great sense of humor and was a selfless, loving person that always did for others. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, at Sunny Side Church with Rev. Jerry Sharp officiating. Interment followed in Highland Park Cemetery of Sicily Island, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Ferriday. Survivors include her husband Walter “Pot” Krause of Sicily Island; daughter, Dana Mayo and husband, Robbie of Harrisonburg; son, Mark Krause and wife Jessica, of Sicily Island; grandchildren, Dylan Mayo, Kacie Mayo, Taylor Krause and Karlie Krause; brother, Barney Johnson, Jr. and wife Dee, of Jena; sister, Nelda King and husband Jeff, of Walters. Pallbearers were Joey Evans, Jerel Evans, Jason Evans, Jody Bondurant, Ron Bruit and Dr. Al Krause.

Survivors include her husband, James Conley Byrnes; father, Kenneth Ford and Libby Ford; mother, Gloria Tolbert Tucker and Gary Tucker; daughters, April Healy, Miranda Bullock and Sarah Ford; son, Daniel Ball; grandchildren, Faith, Hope, Chloe and Bella; sister, Amanda Wiley; brothers, Sherman Ford and Chad Ford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Clarence Guin

Clarence Guin, 86, of Lena, entered eternal rest on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Riverside Hospital in Alexandria. He was born January 17, 1929 to the union of his parents, Mallie and Abby Guin. Mr. Guin was a native of Lena, and was a sawmill worker for many years of his life. He was a member of the Bentley United Pentecostal Church. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He will be dearly missed by his family and by all those who knew him. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Bentley United Pentecostal Church in Bentley, with the Revs. Bruce Maxwell and E.R. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Bay Springs Cemetery at Chopin, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home of Pineville. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Clarence Wayne Guin; his brothers, Mallie Guin, Link Guin, and Clinton Guin; and one sister, Omie Pace. Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Mary E. Guin of Lena; his two sons, Shelton R. Guin and wife Elizabeth of Bentley, and Joel Maurice Guin of Urania; his daughter, Rita Nell Shelton and husband William of Georgetown; his brother, Dewitt Guin of Tullos; his sister, Romie Dyess and husband Jim of Cotile Lake; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Elsie Darlene Lewis

Elsie Darlene Lewis, 70, of Trout, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. She was born September 30, 1945 in Jena, to the union of her parents, Anderson and Rose Lewis. Darlene was a LPN for 27 years and loved reading, crocheting, and working in her garden. She was a member of Zenoria Baptist Church in Zenoria. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m., Nov. 10, at the Jena Choctaw Tribal Center with her oldest grandson, Lawrence Chapman, Jr. reading the eulogy and Pastor Rev. Joel Johnson officiating. Graveside services were held at Chalk Hill Cemetery for immediate family only. Survivors include five daughters, Donna Chapman and spouse Lawrence Chapman, Sr. of Jena, Peggy Allein of Jena, Lisa Norris and spouse Kenny of Trout, Theresa Norton and spouse Joe of Lincecum, and Anissia Robertson and spouse Terry of Nebo; one son, Cleve Johnson, Jr. of Trout; 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and a host step grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Edgar Forrest Cook, Sr.

Edgar Forrest Cook, Sr., 90, of Urania, passed from this life on Monday, November 30, 2015, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was born July 16, 1925 in Urania to the union of his parents, Hardy Maxwell Cook and Myrtle Lee Cook. Forrest proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He joined the Navy shortly after turning 17 in 1942 and served until December 1945. He was discharged with the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer/Pharmacy Mate, after serving 28 months at sea in the South Pacific. He was the honored veteran at the annual Veterans Day luncheon in Olla on Nov. 11, less than three weeks before his death. Forrest was a Mason for over 50 years and a member of Woodmen of the World. His passions included researching his family’s genealogy and the local history of Urania. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Rev. Warren Maxwell officiating. Interment followed in the Urania Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Joseph Todd Cook, II; and his siblings, Charles Cook, Nelda Brakefield, and Olive Haywood. Survivors include his beloved wife of 68 years, Evelyn Barnum Cook of Urania; sons, Edgar Forrest Cook, Jr. and wife Demetria of Prairieville, and Joseph Todd Cook and wife Amy of Tullos; daughter, Patricia Ann Taylor of Austin, TX; brother, Michial Cook of Fayetteville, AR; sister, Carmen Janet McCleery and husband Don of Urania; seven grandchildren, Michelle Stanert, Luke Cook, Morgan Cook, Alex Huddelston, Cole Huddelston, Murphy Cook and Kellan Cook; two great grandchildren, Colton Huddelston and Ancil Huddelston; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Eubanks; and a sister, Doris Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Jimmy R. Eubanks of Urania; daughters, Vickie E. Neal of Trout and Karla Lee of Urania; sons, Johnny K. Eubanks of Pineville, Larry R. Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with the Revs. Karl Wayne Doughty and Buddy Willis officiating. Interment followed in the Pinehill Cemetery of Urania under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Francille Schultz; brothers, Billy Thornton, Bobby Thornton, and Norman Thornton. Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Carrie Ruth Spence Thornton of Urania; brothers, W. M. Thornton, Buddy Thornton and wife Diana, and Randy Thornton and wife Carolyn; sister-in-law, Judy Merle Thornton; and a host of nieces and nephews, and Carrie’s family. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Kathy Anne Yaryan

Kathy Anne Derbonne Yaryan, 65, of Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and a former resident of Jena, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at the Mayo Clinic Sherman House in Phoenix, Arizona. Born Kathy Anne Derbonne, in Alexandria, Louisiana on May 21, 1950 to Arthur E. and Lorena Lawrence Derbonne, Kathy grew up in Alexandria and she graduated from Bolton High School in 1968 where she was a competitive swimmer and gymnast. Kathy was the second child of a family of five children, sisters: Diane Ayers of Ringgold, and Gayle Eskew of Alexandria; and brothers, Arthur Derbonne of Ringgold, and David Derbonne of Natick, MA. Kathy married the love of her life, Van P. Yaryan, on November 21, 1970 at St Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, and they were able to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary four days before she passed. They had two children together - one son, Christopher Charles Yaryan (Tia, daughter-in-law) of Castle Rock, CO and one daughter, Amanda Anne Yaryan Deaton of Silver City, NM. From them they have three grandchildren, Brayden Christopher Yaryan, Peyton Rose Yaryan and Vanessa Anne “Vanna” Deaton. Kathy graduated from LSUA Nursing as a RN in 1978 before working for LaSalle General Hospital in Jena, for 16 years, while her husband was employed as an accountant. In 1994, Kathy and Van moved to Silver City, New Mexico where she worked as a RN and House Supervisor for 18 years, retiring in 2012. Kathy loved to take family camping trips, she was an avid reader and loved walking and living on the beach. She was also a world traveler and had just returned from a trip to Turkey, Greece and Croatia with her husband in September, but most of all she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. Kathy had a true love of life and will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother (KayKay), daughter, sister, friend and an excellent nurse. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 2 p.m., at St Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 2627 Horseshoe Dr. in Alexandria, LA.
