Arthur Ates, Jr., 80, of Georgetown, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at his residence in Georgetown. He was born March 5, 1934 in Urania to the union of his parents, Arthur Ates, Sr. and Iva Jameson Ates. Mr. Ates was a handyman that loved to tinker on anything. He worked for Penrod Drilling for 32 years and was an avid racecar fan and loved squirrel hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. He was a veteran of the
Korean War. Services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Joel Johnson and Tommy Hollis officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah- Fellowship Community under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lillie Mae Ates and Arthur Mae Stamper; and sons-in-law, Justin Cockerham and David Gongre.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Walker Ates of Georgetown; daughters, Kathy and Ben Clark and June and Doug Cockerham, all of Trout; sister, Quentis Bruce of Georgetown; brother, Quentin and Bobbye Ates of Georgetown; special friend, Lester Bolton; special brother- in-law, Harold and Brenda Walker; grandchildren, Jessie “Cody” Cockerham Davis of Georgetown, Justin DeWayne Cockerham and wife Brandie of Pollock; step-grandchildren, Lacy Cockerham, Jami Cockerham, Chelsia Cockerham, Kathryn Clark and Kalab Clark; and 12 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Mark Walker, Michael Walker, Darrel Ates, Justin Traylor, Billy Lewis, Keith Pritchard, Kalab Clark, Will Traylor, and Ross Cockerham. Honorary pallbearers were Earl Self, Lester Bolton, Pete Carnahan, W. C. Holloway, and men of Zenoria Baptist Church.
