Jerry A. Gurie, 79, of Summerville, passed away at his residence on Friday, March 13, 2020.
He was born on September 7, 1940, to the union of his parents Joseph and Audrey Clark Gurie.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 18, from 5-8 p.m. at Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home in Jena.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 19, at 1 p.m., at Jena First Baptist Church with Revs. Rick Feazell, Bo Owens, and Craig Franklin officiating.
Burial will follow in the Gurie-McFarlin Cemetery near Jonesville under the direction of Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.
He graduated from Block High School in Jonesville and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Animal Science.
Upon graduation from LSU, he worked as the farm manager at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home and later with the Alexandria Seed Company in Alexandria before accepting the manager position at Cenla Farmers Coop in Jena. After that, he went into business delivering flowers for nurseries in Forest Hill and selling detailing supplies to car dealerships and detail shops.
Mr. Gurie was an active member at Jena First Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 38 years and he was involved in every facet of church life with his main focus on missions. He was also a life-long member of the choir, loved to sing, and loved Gospel music.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and with his fellow church members. He will always be remembered as a man who lived his faith in Jesus Christ and shared the Gospel at every opportunity he had.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Jimmie Gurie; two sons, Jeff Gurie of Alexandria and Jason Gurie and wife Beau of Absorkie, MT; three grandsons, Dayton, Jacob, and Eli; three granddaughters, Leah, Isabella, and Aubrey; and one brother, Randy Gurie of Baton Rouge.
Pallbearers will be Seth Parker, Tyler Parker, Craig Breithaupt, Adam Powell, Adam Taylor, and Jack McFarlin.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Jena First Baptist Church.
Memorials can be made to the Jena First Baptist Church Spanish Ministry, of which he was actively involved.
