“D. M.” Wood

Delbert Monroe “D.M.” Wood, 91, of Jonesville, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

He was born Friday, Aug. 21, 1925 in Belmont, MS, to the family of George Authur and Mary Thorne Wood.

D.M. began farming at the early age of 14 in Arkansas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He then returned to Truman, Arkansas and married Mary Magdalene (“Mag”) Russell in 1949. D.M. and Mag had two sons, Charles and Gary. Mr. Wood bought farmland in the Jonesville area in 1964, and he and his family moved to Catahoula Parish shortly thereafter. D.M. and his sons established Wood Farms and have been farming in Catahoula and Concordia Parishes ever since.

Mr. Wood loved and served the Lord faithfully and was a dedicated member and Deacon of Utility Baptist Church for almost 50 years. Mr. D.M. loved his family and instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of prayer, hard work, honesty, and integrity.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Utility Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Russell and James Foster officiating.

Interment followed in Locust Grove Cemetery of Jonesville under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Willie, Pat, Buford and Gerald Wood; four sisters: Hazel Heavner, Ovella Seacrese, Alice Fry and DeEtta Hutchins; and an infant grandson.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Magdalene (“Mag”) Russell Wood; his sons, Charles Delbert Wood and wife Nan of Jonesville, and Gary Wayne Wood and wife Pam of Natchez; three grandsons, Charles Scott Wood, of Orlando, FL, Jeremy Wayne Wood and wife Christie of Jonesville, and Russell Wayne Wood and wife Meghan of Natchez; two

granddaughters: Alicia Kay Wood of Baton Rouge, and Erin Elizabeth Wood Brown and husband Brent of Jonesville; five great-grandsons, Tyler Brenton Brown, Jeremy Maxwell Wood, Honorè Monroe Wood, Chase Robert Brown and Carter Mason Wood; and five great-granddaughters, Maggie Grace Brown, Mary Kaitlyn Wood, Lyla Jolie Wood, Sophie Elise Wood and Lucy Geneviève Wood; and a special caregiver, Esther Ward.

Pallbearers were Scott Wood, Jeremy Wood, Russ Wood, Kenneth Wood, Brent Brown and Tyler Brown.

Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Utility Baptist Church.
