Harvey Belgard

Harvey Belgard, 84, of Deville, passed away peacefully from this life on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at his home surrounded by family and friends.

Harvey served the Louisiana Conference of the Free Methodist Church as pastor of several churches in central Louisiana. He was a member of New Hope Free Methodist Church, where through the years he served as song leader, adult Sunday School teacher, and interim pastor.

He was a carpenter by trade and he retired as a carpenter contractor in the housing industry. People who knew him in life, those who worked with him and for him, testify to Harvey’s honesty, integrity, and sense of fairness. His sense of humor carried him through the difficult and trying times of life.

As a songwriter his output was prolific: he wrote more than 200 songs in the country and gospel genres. His writing showed such promise that in the late 1950s he was offered a songwriting job in Nashville. After deep consideration of his priorities and responsibilities, he concluded that raising his family in the quiet, simple, laid back setting of Deville was more valuable than whatever fame and fortune Nashville might bring.

Harvey’s final song, “Homeward Bound,” reminds us that while death is certain we do have the hope of Glory:

“This ole body that I’m use to, would have been glorified; I won’t need no wings of angels, I’m just gonna glide way above that big ole Moon, where man has never gone and everybody’s shouting ohh we’re going home.”

He loved the company of family, friends, and musicians, and established a music park near his home that served as a venue for the monthly “Jamboree in the Pines” show.

Harvey casts a big shadow over the many living generations of his family. He will be missed.

Services celebrating his life were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 13, at New Hope Free Methodist Church of Deville with Rev. Charles “Beau” Edwards, officiating, assisted by Eddie Parker and Rev. Emitte Belgard.

Interment followed in the Big Island Memorial Gardens of Deville under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Alexandria.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Billie Jean Belgard; parents, Harry Gold and Agnes Dodge Belgard; sister, Goldie Jean Paul; and grandchildren, Savanah Belgard, and Robert Fisher.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Thomas Wayne Belgard (Christy), Jason Belgard (Dana), and Avery Belgard (Sophia); daughters, Tammy Belgard (Randy), and Cecelia Belgard Edwards (Charles Beau); brothers, Herbert Belgard (Ruth), and Emitte Belgard (Beverly); sisters, Faye Nolan, and Helen Kirk (Robert “Bob”); 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, and numerous other family and friends.

Pallbearers were Thomas Wayne Belgard, Jason Belgard, Avery Belgard, E. W. Beaubouef, Billy Cole, Kevin McKneely, Allen Edwards, and Tommy Dunn.

“Time for me to go now, I won’t say goodbye. Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise, when all the world is new, just look for me and love me as you know I loved you. Time for me to leave, but I won’t say goodbye, look for me in rainbows high up in the sky. In the evening sunset, when all the world is through, just look for me and love me and I’ll be close to you. It won’t be forever, the day will come and then, my loving arms will hold you when we meet again.”

In loving memory of the greatest wife, mother, and mi-mi anyone could ever ask for.

Janice Lucille Richmond

Janice Lucille Richmond, 72, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, after an extended battle with cancer.

She was born on December 4, 1946, to the union of Jim and Josie Richmond in Caldwell Parish where she grew up. She lived in Jena, LA for over 10 years in the late 1960’s and 1970’s where she was a charter member of the Jena Jaycees Jaynes and helped form the first ever Jena Dixie Youth Tee-Ball League.

During her life she held many jobs, including apartment manager, loan officer, and special needs home health representative, until her health forced her to retire.

Her passions included birds, flowers, and the love of her life, her children and grandchildren. She was a Christian who prayed every day and night for her family, calling out her children and grandchildren by name.

She had a big heart with a love for everyone she met and would talk about her children and grandchildren with everyone - even people she met for the first time. Her love for others was also displayed even in death as she wanted to do something to help cure cancer so others would not have to suffer from the disease.

So, at her request, her body was donated to the LSU Medical Center so research could be done to help prevent and save others from having to suffer from cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jimmy Richmond, and her granddaughters Lauren Franklin and Kassie Franklin.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Penny Franklin Justus of Bastrop, Glen Franklin, Craig Franklin and wife Kim, and Scott Franklin, all of Jena; her sisters, Sharon Curtis and husband Glynn of Grayson, Gloria Parker and husband Cecil from Picayune, MS, and Kay Stinnett and husband Walter from Terrell, TX, one brother, James Richmond and wife Barbara from Sapulpa, OK; and sister-n-law Rhonda Richmond of Columbia.
