Clara Lee Jackson

Clara “Clover” Lee Jackson, 67, departed this life on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.

She was born October 28, 1951 to her parents, Milton Green and Martha Bruce.

Clara accepted and confessed Christ as Lord at an early age at Greater St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. L. H. Harris.

Clara resided in St. Joseph until she relocated to Houston, in 2013.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 6, at Greater St. John Baptist Church with pastors Revs. Adrian Lundy and Sammie Guice, Jr. officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Ruby Webb, Laura Humphries, Arthur Green, Milton Green, Jr., Ervin Green, Cherry Matthew, Martha Windon; and children, Michael Jackson and Demetria Brown.

Left to cherish her memories are, children, Vikki Jackson, Kylie (Domonic) Nellum, Kimberly Jackson, Cathleen Robinson, and Randy Jackson; a special son, Timothy Parks; siblings, Delores Brinson, Stella Beard, Wanda Lee, Betty Johnson, Billy Johnson, Kathleen Lewis, Ella Powell, Saul Johnson, Emma Jackson, Rosemary Johnson, Anna Stevenson, Maple Rice, and Essie Shankle; 23 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a host of great nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jimmie R. Haygood

Jimmie Ruth Hooter Haygood, 68, of Lake Charles, and formerly of Enterprise and Columbia, left this earth for her heavenly home on Saturday, June 27, 2019 in Lake Charles after an extended illness.

She was born May 21, 1931 in Enterprise to the union of her parents, E. E. Hooter and Bessie Lambert Hooter.

Jimmie always had a heart for helping others. While her husband was alive, she worked alongside him in various ministries: Sunday school, nursing home ministry, local singing events. They also pastored Plum Grove Pentecostal Church and Burroughs Pentecostal Church.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Lake Charles, and continued her passion to work with the homebound as a private sitter and caregiver. She touched so many with her love and compassion. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 6, at the Old Catahoula Cemetery of Enterprise with Rev. Jason Paul officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. C. J. Haygood; her parents; and sisters, Anna Lea Crawford and Mona LaDell Pittman.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Candace Mosher and husband Mark of Ragley, LA and Tami Blocker and husband Charlie of Moss Bluff, LA; four grandchildren, Jada Cannon, Garret Vincent and wife Britney, Lauren Ulman and husband Eric, and Stormi Sonnier and husband Clayton; and seven great-grandchildren.

Johnny Gilliam

Johnny Major Gilliam, 84, of Olla, passed from this life on Friday, July 5, 2019.

He was born August 20, 1935 in Urania to the union of his parents, Arch Gilliam and Lena Varnell Gilliam.

Johnny was a retired truck driver and a hard worker his entire life. He served his country as a United States Navy Veteran. He was proud of his service for our nation.

He was a man of many talents, he could do anything. His greatest accomplishment in life was his wife of sixty years and his children and grandchildren whom he loved and cherished the most. Johnny was the kindest and most thoughtful person you would ever meet. If you had a problem his door was always open to anyone that needed shelter, food, love or just some good advice.   

He always kept God close to his heart and soul. God knows he’s taken home a great selfless man who will be missed so much. He was our family rock. We love and miss you already, but we know you’re not hurting anymore.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Sunday, July 7, from the Olla chapel of Riser Funeral Home with Rev. Bo Prather officiating.

Interment will full military honors followed in the Chickasaw Cemetery, east of Olla, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arch Gilliam, Jr. and James Smith; two sisters: Geraldine Gilliam Hatten and Katie Smith; daughter, Sheila Young; and two grandsons, Jeromy Spruell and Logan Franklin.

Those left to cherish a lifetime of memories and love are his wife, Ann Gilliam; his daughters, Donna Stewart and husband Buck, Pat Gilliam and Richard, Sandy Lee, and Dee-Dee Gilliam and Bubba; his son, Johnny Wayne Gilliam and wife Kristi; his grandchildren: Danny, Robbie, Damon, J. T. and Ethon Young, Dustin and Joseph Lee, Joey Fuzzell, Storm Kasey Stewart, Tristan, Britt and Maleah Gilliam; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joseph Lee, Dustin Lee, Joey Fuzzell, Storm Kasey Stewart, Tristan Gilliam and Britt Gilliam, with Maleah Gilliam serving as an honorary pallbearer.

Mary LaVerne Adams

Mary LaVerne Gough Adams, 91, of Sikes, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield following an extended illness.

She was born May 22, 1928 at Hinton Camp, Louisiana, to the union of her parents, Ed and Edna “Little Maw” Gough.

She was a lifelong resident of Winn Parish, a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She married the love of her life, Hubert Adams in 1949, and they spent 70 years as man and wife.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 5, from the Olla chapel of Riser Funeral Home with Rev. Stacey Pitmon officiating.

Interment followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery of Sikes under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

She leaves behind her precious husband, Hubert Adams of Sikes; her sons, Glen Adams (Pat), David Adams (Jackie), Roy Adams (Ethel) and Donnie Adams (Dewanna); grandchildren, Shannon Adams (Amy), Allen Adams (Amie), Kristin Pelham (Matt), Sarah Barbo (Tommy), Matthew Adams, Chris Adams, Melissa Rainbolt (Tommy), Derek Lisenby, Toni Bacon (Danny), Todd Long (Nickie); her brother, John Gough (Nita); and numerous great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tracy Humphries, Larry Humphries, Tommy Barbo, Kenny Cox, Chris Adams, Derek Lisenby, Allen Adams, and Shannon Adams.

Ruth C. Chevallier

Ruth Cunningham Chevallier, 89, of the Mt. Herman Community, wife, mother, grandmother, life-long care taker, passed from this life to her Heavenly home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, July 2, 2019.

She was born May 8, 1930, in Oakdale, to the union of her parents, Henry Thomas “Steve” and Rosalea Vallery Cunningham.

Ruth was born with a servant’s heart, which played a part in choosing her career path.  Her passion, along with caring for and loving her family, was helping children at Pinecrest State School, where she was a long-time nurse in various departments, before retiring in 1992.  

She was an avid reader and the oldest living member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities; from Sunday school teacher and director, Vacation Bible School teacher and director, to a host of various church committees. She was a childhood member of the Pentecostals of Alexandria.

Ruth will always be remembered for volunteering to take friends and family from the Walters Community to doctor appointments in Alexandria.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 6, at Bethel Methodist Church of Deville with Rev. Bruce Lofton officiating.

Interment followed in the Bethel Cemetery of Deville with arrangements by Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband and love of her life, and father of her children, Wanie Chevallier; her second husband, Clinton Lachney; and her last husband, Willard Chevallier, Sr.; brothers Howard Cunningham, Dan Cunningham, and Jack Cunningham; sisters, Audrey Berthelot, Joy White, and Mamie McGee Derbonne.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Gail Beach of Sante Fe, TX; Glynn Chevallier of Alexandria; Jackie Rouse and husband Raymond of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Jami Temple and husband Jonathan of Sante Fe, TX; Joshua Beach and wife Jennifer of Natchez, MS; and Jennifer Cowart and husband Chris, of Pineville; four great-grandsons and one step great-grandson, Travis Conner of Sante Fe, TX; Jax and Brandt Beach, of Natchez, MS; and Brennan and Collin Cowart of Pineville; her sisters, Amy Leviner and Ruby McKellar of Alexandria; brother, Tommy Cunningham of York, PA; along with a host of nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Carl Albert Edwards, 66, of Rhinehart, passed from this life on Friday, July 5, 2019, at his residence.

He was born December 18, 1952 in Jena.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 7, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Brother Buster Sharp officiating.

Interment followed in the Pine Hill Cemetery near Olla under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Albert Edwards of Jena; mother, Catherine Hudnall of Jena; sisters, Patsy Desoto and Billie Jean Smith.

Those left to cherish in his memory include his son, James Carl Edwards of Houston TX; daughters, Jeanie Edwards Coleman and husband Chris of Whitehall, and Samantha Edwards; and six grandchildren.

Susan A. Templeton

Susan Armstrong Templeton, 57, of Urania, passed from this life on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at the home of her mother in Grayson, following an extended illness.

She was born January 14, 1962 in Monroe to the union of her parents, Charles Floyd Armstrong and Mattie Lee Franks Armstrong.

Susan had a heart of gold. She was always aware of those around her and never wanted to hurt anyone’s feelings. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and her family meant everything to her.

Although she faced many battles in life she placed her faith in the Lord Jesus and served Him with gladness and love in her heart. Her home church was New Life Pentecostal Church and even though she was unable to attend her heart was always there.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 13 from the sanctuary of Urania Pentecostal Church of Urania with the Revs. David Poole and Clay Hutto officiating.

Interment followed in the Urania Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

She was preceded in death by her father; her brother, Michael Armstrong; three sisters, Theresa Armstrong, Paula Peavy and Billie Gene Armstrong; and her brother-in-law, Clarence Moore.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Heather Floyd of Urania; two sons, Shannon Floyd of Urania and Matthew Floyd (Amber) of Kelly; two sisters, Peggy A. Moore of Kelly and Marilyn Harker (Marc) of Nebraska; and two grandsons, Landon Johns and Hunter Floyd.

Pallbearers were Daryl Floyd, Keith Floyd, Charles Floyd, David Ashley, Chris Bryant and Jason Moore.

Charles Ray Slay, Jr., 51, of Rhinehart, passed from this life Tuesday night, July 2, 2019, in Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, at the Jonesville Church of God with Rev. Marion Trisler and Brad Crooks officiating.

Interment followed in the Garden of Memories under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roscoe Slay, grandmother, Madge Slay; grandfather, Claude Mott; grandmother, Lillie Comeaux; aunts, Lillian Russell and Betty Coleman; uncles, Howard Mott and Elmer Mott; and cousin, Timothy Russell.

He is survived by his wife, Nikki Slay of Rhinehart; daughter, LeAnn Jane Slay of the Philippines; mother, Eva Mott Slay of Jena; father, Charles R. Slay, Sr. of Jena; one sister, Patricia Slay Looney and husband Jason of Pineville; two nieces, Lillian Looney of Lafayette, and Destiny Wells of Pollock; two nephews, James Looney and Scotty Looney, both of Pineville; cousin, Kenneth Russell.  

Pallbearers were Debra Stockman, David Smith, Phil Cranston, James Looney, Scotty Looney, and Marty Crooks.

Honorary pallbearers were Jason Looney, and Kenneth Russell.

John Murphy Wyles

John Murphy Wyles, 50, of Winnsboro, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at his home in Winnsboro.

He was born August 30, 1968 in Columbia to the union of his parents, Herman Lee Wyles, Jr. and Betty Flo Cassels Wyles.

John worked in law enforcement his entire adult life. He started out with the Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s Department then went to the Monroe Police Department before starting his career with the Louisiana State Police. He was a Trooper with Troop F before transferring to the Emergency Services Unit in 2004.

John was promoted to Deputy Command Technician where he served as a bomb technician. He served in several supervisory positions as well as received numerous service awards and commendations.

While John loved and enjoyed his work, his family was his greatest love and source of joy. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 12, at Outreach Baptist Church near Columbia with the Revs. Shane Duke and Kevin Bates officiating.

Interment followed in the Columbia Hill Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Kyle Rogers.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lori Wofford Wyles and their son, Chase Daniel Wyles. He also leaves behind his children, John Tyler Wyles and Allison Lea Wyles; brothers, Kevin Wyles and wife Beverly and Jeffery Wyles and wife Elecia; mother and father-in-law, Jean and Larry Wofford; brother-in-law, Steve Wofford and fiancé Sabrina; special nieces and nephews, Christopher and Claire Wyles, Lillie Wyles Rogers, Blake and Kristin Wyles, Scot Wyles, Nathan Wofford, Gannon and Gabby Wofford; great-nieces and nephews, Kyla, Cameron, Livi, Jude and Lucy.

Pallbearers were members of the Louisiana State Police Honor Guard.

Honorary pallbearers were Neil Riser, Chad Ryan, Ned Ryan, Eloy Washer, Mike Perry, Lance Beauvais, Shelly Hopkins, Ed Bobbitt, Ricky Caraway, George Mulvaney, Don Warren, Ryan Jacob and the Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Unit.

He was born June 23, 1942 at Wildsville.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, August 2, at Concordia Funeral Home in Ferriday.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Old Daughters Baptist Church at Wildsville, with Pastor Woodrow Pellerie officiating.

Interment will follow in the Athlone Cemetery of Wildsville under direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Effie Mae Bradford

Effie Mae Breithaupt Bradford, 86, of Montgomery, Texas, formerly of Jonesville, left this world peacefully, with family by her side, on Friday, July 26, 2019, after suffering a major stroke. She is now with our Lord and Savior and whole again in both body and mind.

Born October 16, 1932, in Walters, she is predeceased by her parents, Ethel Cooper Breithaupt and Robert Fulton Breithaupt; her husband, John Alvin Bradford; her brothers, Robert Breithaupt, Otis “Leon” Breithaupt and Walter Breithaupt; and her sister, Colleen Breithaupt.

Effie graduated from Block High School in 1951 and obtained a 2-year degree from the Louisiana Business School in Pineville in 1953. She worked as a bookkeeper for Brown Brothers Feed Store in Jonesville, for over 40 years, and in her later years, for CARC Work Activity Center in Jonesville. She was a strong Christian woman who raised her children with a deep-seated belief in God.

She loved all children and literally “lighted up” when they were around. While she was mostly known for her sweet nature, she did have a mischievous side. She touched the lives of anyone with whom she came in contact. In 2010, after being diagnosed with vascular dementia, she moved to Montgomery, Texas, to live with her oldest daughter and lived the last 4½ years of her life at Conroe Health Care Center in Conroe, Texas, where the staff lovingly cared for her until her death.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 3, at Pritchard Baptist Church. A graveside service will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery at Rhinehart under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Effie is survived by her three children - daughter, Sharon Kay Davis West and husband Richard, of Montgomery, TX; daughter, Kathy Anne Davis Cloessner and husband Paul, of Aiken, SC; and son, Bobby Warren Davis, and wife Willie Mae, of Thibodaux; five grandchildren, Andy Davis (wife Kristen), Loren Davis Vines (husband James), Emily Cloessner, Everett Cloessner (wife Brittany) and Samantha Cloessner; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Davis, Lily Davis, Molly Vines, Brody Vines and Grayson Cloessner; and her older sister, Lou Breithaupt Robertson, of Jena.

T. “Glen” Coolman

Thomas “Glen” Coolman, 46, of Pollock, and a native of Olla, entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 23, 2019, in Alexandria.

He was born November 20, 1972.     

Glen was an electrician supervisor for Diamond Offshore Drilling and most recently for OAR, (Offshore Air & Refrigeration), of Lafayette. He also owned Louisiana Lighting and Maintenance and enjoyed restoring and working on cars. He was of the Baptist faith and loved going to the beach and to Vegas! He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were held at 10 a.m., June 28, in the chapel of Rush Funeral Home of Pineville with Rev. Denver McBroom officiating.

Interment followed in Restland Cemetery of Pollock under direction of Rush Funeral Home of Pineville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Smith Coolman.

Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory include his loving wife of 21 years, Holly McManemin Coolman of Pollock; two daughters, Brianna McManemin, and Brooke Coolman, both of Pollock; his father, Olan Coolman of Olla; one brother, Keith Morgan and his wife Michelle, of Loreauville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were James Welch, Jonathan Brossett, Robert Gordan, Jr., Brandon Barron, Toby Stegall and Jason Campbell.

Honorary were Arnie Hyde, Dennis Prudhomme and Robbie Gordon.

Lonnie Lee Corley, Sr., 72, of Winnfield, passed away July 25, 2019 in Tioga, after an extended illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 28, at the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Rev. Rick Hargrove officiating.

Interment with full military honors followed in the Welcome Home Cemetery, east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

Her was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Corley and Martha “Mattie” Atkins Corley; his wife of 38 years, Evelyn Varnell Corley; son, Steven Procell;  and brothers,  Charles Corley and Johnnie Corley.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sisters,  Marilyn Morgan and Elizabeth “Liz” Hargrove; son, Lonnie Lee Corley, Jr.;  daughters, Kimberly Corley Lawrence and Jennifer Corley Strain; grandchildren,  Tony Procell, Stephanie Procell, Megan Procell, Amanda Smiley, Ryan Ellis, Johnathon Duncan, Ethan Duncan, Justin Gough and Madison Black,  as well as twelve great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Lonnie Lee Corley, Jr., Johnathon Duncan, Ethan Duncan, Justin Gough, Tony Procell and James Black.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 29, at Oak Grove Free Methodist Church of Jonesville with the Revs. Emitte Belgard and Beau Edwards officiating.

Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Doc and Daisy Bass; and daughter, Edna LaCroix.

Ernest C. Gibson

Ernest C. Gibson, 83, of Lafayette, and formerly of Jena, passed from this life on July 24, 2019 in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

He was born July 29, 1935 to the union of his parents, Leroy and Hazel Keene Gibson of Jena.

Ernest spent his working career in the petroleum industry serving as a Drilling Superintendent and later as a Consultant. He very much enjoyed fishing in his spare time and certainly his family and grandchildren.

He will certainly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 26, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with Rev. Todd Richardson officiating.

Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leroy Gibson and wife Shirley; and one sister, Myrna Taylor and husband Lonnie.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mary Gibson of Lafayette; one son, Ernest “Skipper” Gibson and wife Marla of Euless, TX; two daughters, Christie Governale and husband Chad of New Orleans, and Theresa Blanchard and husband James of Lafayette; one son-in-law, Todd Atkinson; grandchildren, Ashley Gibson, Aaron Blanchard, Copeland Atkinson, Katelyn Blanchard, Dominic Governale, Devyn Governale; and one great grandchild Aspen Gibson.

His six grandchildren were honored to serve as pallbearers.

Charles Ray Kelly, 68, of Jena, passed from this life on Wednesday evening, July 24, 2019, with his wife and family by his side.

He was born February 12, 1951 in Jena to the union of his parents, Charles Eugene Kelly of Pollock and Dorothy Breland of Jena.

Charles worked in construction as a roofer in the surrounding area.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 29, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with Rev. Gary Norris officiating.

Interment followed in the Jena Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Pamela Kelly, Diane Evans and Barbara Kelly; a brother, Tony Kelly; and a daughter, Brenda Kelly.

Survivors include his wife, Marcelle Walpole Kelly; one daughter, Norma Kelly; a step-daughter, Jenny Knight; one son, Wesley Kelly; two step-sons, Jack Zeagler, and Jim Zeagler, all of Jena; two sisters, Terry Beaubouef and husband Ronald, and Sharon Jean Day and husband “Little Dave” of Texas.

Pallbearers were Jim Zeagler, Jack Zeagler, Michael Zeagler, Scott Knight, Jamie Zeagler, and Hunter Kelly, with Ronald Beaubouef serving as an honorary pallbearer.

Huey Edward King

Huey Edward King, 81, of Trout, passed from this life on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria following an extended illness.

He was born July 27, 1937 in Aimwell to the union of his parents, Oscar Edward King and Mary Lou Barr King.

Huey was a well-known carpenter serving numerous families in the Jena area with their carpenter needs.

He also served on the Board of Directors of the LaSalle Waterworks District and LaSalle Sewer District at Good Pine for many years, and served as chairman for several years.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 25, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Truman Stagg and Sister Amanda Carpenter officiating.

Interment followed in the Nebo Cemetery of Nebo under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Nugent King; parents; brother, George King; and grandchild, Landon Jackson.

Those left to cherish in his memory include his daughters, Toni Malone and husband Shawn of Chatham, Kim Hudnall and husband Donny of Trout, and Debra Ann King of Summit, MS; sister, Lily Louise Partin of Jena; grandchildren, Samantha Malone, Ashley Hudnall, Dillan Hudnall, Justin Jones; one great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Justin King, Keith King, James Robbins, Mike Robbins, Aubrey Brown, Robert Terral, Hank Cooksey, and John Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Nugent, Dillan Hudnall, Marshall Chapman, Jimmy Joubert, Brad O’Quinn, Cleveland Poole, Ronnie Jordan, all the folks at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Jena, all the former employees of Hayes Lumber Co., and all the past and present employees at La-Salle Water Works.

Robert L. Spence

Robert L. Spence, 87, passed from this life on Monday morning, July 22, 2019, in the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena surrounded by his loving family and friends. He died one day after his 87th birthday.

He was born July 21, 1932 in Pineville, Florida (Escambia County) to the union of his parents, Robert Franklin and Myrtle Lee Lambert Spence.

Robert resided in the vicinity of Jena where he spent his working career in the Petroleum Industry as a Drilling Superintendent. He was a devoted father, truly loved all his friends, and was a devout Christian. He enjoyed taking his wife fishing in his spare time, and also had a hobby of woodworking. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jul 24, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Russell and Johnnie Phillips officiating.

Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Faye (Dubose) Spence; his parents; and two brothers, Horace Spence, and Derbert Spence.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his three sons, Robert Spence, Jr. and wife Linda of Jena, Terry Spence and wife Kathy of Manifest and Bruce Spence and wife Amy of Jena; two daughters, Janice Nolker and husband Stephen, and Cindy Fitzgerald and husband Eugene, all of Jena; one sister, Lou Ellen Adams and husband Max of Goldonna; 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1.5 great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joseph Spence, Robert Spence III., Matt Spence, Bud Spence, Lynn Spence, and Dustin Spence.

John L. Bloodsaw

John L. Bloodsaw, 77, of Wildsville, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, in Jena.

He was born Johnnie Lynn Bloodsaw, on June 23, 1942 at Wildsville, to the union of his parents, Issac “Ike” Bloodsaw, Sr. and Cenolia Allen Bloodsaw.

John confessed his life to Christ at an early age and proudly served Old Daughters Baptist Church throughout most of his adult life.

He put his ambition to become a professional boxer aside to help on the family farm. He was a firm believer in respecting and honoring his parents. He worked on the family farm for more than 60 years. His knowledge and love was felt beyond the family farm.

John held a PhD that no brick or mortar school could provide. His blessing was his hands, the tools he used to provide for his family and help others in his community.

A homegoing celebration was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Old Daughters Baptist Church at Wildsville, with Pastor Woodrow Pellerie officiating.

Interment followed in the Athlone Cemetery of Wildsville under direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lamontris Franklin; two great grandsons, Kenneth Bloodsaw, III and Carleon Plains; and four brothers, Ike Bloodsaw, Jr., Jesse Bloodsaw, Joseph Bloodsaw, and Herman Bloodsaw.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, John A. Bloodsaw of Jonesville, Frederick M. Bloodsaw, Sr. of Ferriday, Pamela M. Simpkins of Junction City, KS, Kenneth I. Bloodsaw, Sr. of Jena, Kimberly (Eddie) Williams of Hot Springs, AR, Cassandra Anderson of Ferriday, Tyrone Anderson of Ferriday, Demario (Keisha) Franklin of Houston, TX, Jemarlon (Lashonda) Franklin of Harrisonburg, and Tameka Franklin of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, ShaDa Bloodsaw, Courtney (Wesley) Mock, Frederick Bloodsaw, Jr., Herman Bloodsaw, Terrance Bloodsaw, Kenyata Simpkins, Kenneth Bloodsaw, Jr., Kaleb Bloodsaw, Kaisley Franklin, Jatavius Franklin, Alaysia Savage, Bennie White, Quinnettie White, Deyon White, Rikishi Anderson, Charity Wesley, Larry Wesley, Ta’marion Griffin, Jiren Lee, Thalia Anderson, Tyrese Anderson, Rose Marie Anderson, Ty’keyel Anderson, Ty’landon Anderson; nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.

C. W. Breland, Sr.

Clarence William “C.W.” Breland, Sr., 80, of Jena, entered eternal rest on Thursday, August 1, 2019, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

He was born November 24, 1938 to the union of his parents, Clarence and Lillie Breland.

C.W. was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Jena, and the retired business owner of B&E Machine Shop, which was in operation since 1973 in Good Pine. He was an avid sports fan, supporting the Jena Giants and a fan and supporter of his grandchildren as well!

He enjoyed playing dominos with his brothers and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, August 5, at Magnolia Baptist Church in the Rogers Community with Rev. Mark Breland officiating.

Interment followed in Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery under direction of Rush Funeral Home of Pineville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Betty Breland; one granddaughter, Kayla Breland; and one great grandchild, Ember Breland.

Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory include two sons, Bill Breland of Jena and Dennis Breland of Natchitoches; two brothers, Francis Breland and Paul Curtis Breland, both of Jena; one sister, Rhonda Jean Evans of Arizona; six grandchildren, Clint Breland of West Monroe, Ethan Breland of Hattisburg, MS, Olivia Breland of Jena, Charlie Breland of Jena, Madelyn Turcotte of West Monroe and William Earl Breland of Zachary; and two great grandchildren, Lily Turcotte and Camille Turcotte.
