Cathy McCartney Boyd, 45, of Pollock, passed from this life on Thursday, March  27, 2014, at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. She was born August 2, 1968, being the daughter of Elaine McCartney and the late Aubrey B. McCartney. Many knew Cathy from her position at Paradise Catfish Kitchen, where she served as a waitress for over 20 years. She was also a prep cook at the Jena Choctaw Pines Casino at Creola. Cathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and niece that will be greatly missed. Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, at the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Pineville with Rev. Danny Garner officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Pineville. She was preceded in death by her father and an aunt, Dorothy Cole. Survivors include her husband of 18 years, Derek Boyd; son, Jeffery Stallings and wife Laken; daughters, Diana James and husband Mike, and Ashley Rosenberg and husband Chris; mother, Elaine McCartney; grandchildren, Christian, Tyler, Jailah, Connor, Maci, and Maddox; brothers, Brian McCartney, Jimmy McCartney, and Robert McCartney; sister, Jeannie Barbat; special uncle, Jerry Wilson; and numerous other family members and friends. Pallbearers were Jeffery Stallings, Chris Rosenberg, Mike James, Randy Randall, Ryan Randall, and Blake Byrd. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy McCartney, Lonnie McCartney, Dain Boyd, and Cameron Byrd

Estelle Stapleton Allen

Estelle Stapleton Allen, 77, of Columbia, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Citizens Medical Center in Columbia Heights following an extended illness. She was born July 8, 1936 at Columbia to the union of her parents, John Wesley Stapleton and Fannie Laura Davis Stapleton. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, March 31, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Harrell “Bubba” Tucker
officiating. Interment followed in the Welcome Home Cemetery, located just east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Leonard Allen; and two precious daughters, Laura Tucker and Melissa Allen. Survivors include two daughters, Monica Gentry and husband Gary , and Lea Ann Allen, all of Columbia; four sisters, Betty Sharp, Arlene Ruddell, Jo Ann Bresett, and Virginia LeDaux; four grandsons, Zeb Tucker, Jacob Gentry, Zack Gentry and Brian Fatheree; and five great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Zeb Tucker, Jacob Gentry, Zack Gentry, Jesse Jacks, Gary Tucker, and Gary Gentry.

Lindsey Renae Bryan, 30, of Zachary, passed from this life on Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Zachary. Lindsey, formerly of Jena, was born on December 23, 1983 in Alexandria. She was a loving and devoted mother to the sunshine of her life, Lawson Kenneth Henry. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in the Nebo Community with the Revs. Byron Norris and Matthew Merrell officiating. Interment followed in the  Nebo Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death   by her maternal grandparents, Willie and Marie Paul; and paternal grandfather, L. E. Bryan. Survivors include John Henry and their son, Lawson Henry; parents, Kenny and Martha Bryan and Debra and Duaine Johnson; sister, Laurie Hunt and husband Stephen, with sons, Easton and Kaiden; brother, Beau Bryan; paternal grandmother, Alice Ruth Bailey and husband Garland; and a host of family and friends. Louie Bell Vines

Louie Bell Vines, 74, of Winnfield, passed from this life on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Riverside Hospital in Alexandria. She was born Saturday, October 28, 1939, in Castlebury, Alabama, to the union of her parents, Alfred Hammonds and Viola Wallace Hammonds. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 6, at Hurricane Creek Baptist Church of Dodson, with the Revs. Johnnie Phillips, Rayford Chandler, and Teddy Sharbono officiating.
Interment followed in Hurricane Creek Cemetery of Dodson under direction of Southern Funeral Homes, Inc. of Winnfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert Doyle Vines; a daughter, Carin Beal; two brothers, Riley Hammonds and Tom Hammonds; and two sisters, Rose Garner and Betty Smithart. Survivors include one son, Dewayne Vines and wife Becky of Pineville; one daughter,  Sharon Thompson and husband Doug of Olla; eight grandchildren, Chris, Misty, Heather, Justin, Lacey, Matt, Jacob, and Joey; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends

Alton Theodore Kelly

Alton Theodore Kelly, 60, of Winn Parish, passed from this life on Monday, March 31, 2014, at his sister’s home in Deville. He was born December 5, 1953 in Urania to the union  of Otho and Vaudie Meredith Kelly. He was raised in Olla, but was living in Winn Parish at the time of his death. Alton was a retired Petty Officer with the United States Navy, serving 20 years before retiring in July 1992. He served on numerous ships overseas and was also stationed at the Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Illinois. He was also stationed in San Diego, California and was awarded numerous accommodations and medals in his career. At the time of his illness,
Alton was an assistant manager at Mac’s Supermarket in Jena. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 3, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Rev. Denver McBroom officiating. Interment followed in
Beech Creek Cemetery near Olla under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a nephew, Landon McClure. Survivors include his sister, Bessie McClure and  husband Buddy of Deville; nephew, Jason Williams and  wife Courtney, and their children, Chandler and Emilie Williams, all of Greenbriar, AR; niece, Laurie McClure of Deville; and numerous cousins. Pallbearers were Jason Williams, James Williams, Denny Boyd, Trey Mallette, Matthew Mallette, and Jimmy Brooks

Ana Sue “Sudie” Hooter

Ana Sue “Sudie” Hooter, 70, left earth for her eternal home on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Throughout the last months of her life, she endured multiple medical challenges. In the end, she won, for she is eternally healed.
She was born July 2, 1943 in LaSalle Parish to the union of her parents, Ana BrazaDee Reeves Hooter and Howard Lester Hooter. Sudie loved Jesus and celebrated her Spiritual birthday yearly beginning on October
12, 1986, when she accepted Christ as her Savior and was  baptized. She lived life to the fullest, a life that touched so many. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 5, at the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe with  Joe Hooter officiating. Interment followed in the Wilbanks Cemetery near Summerville under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe. When Sudie reached Heaven on March 30, she was met by her parents; brothers, Duane Hooter, Fred Hooter, and Jack Hooter; sister, Jean Thompson; and longtime forever friend, Nina Hay. Survivors include her sisters, Doris Bradley, Jan Hardwell and husband Jonie, and Camille Hatch; cousin, Linda Collins Gard; and forever friend, Toni Stanford.  She also leaves her love and legacy to numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews who she loved as her own. She had a special way of making each one feel that they were the most important. Pallbearers were Charles Noble Hatch, III, Phillip Bradley, Scott Hooter, Howard Thompson, Buddy Frost, and Barry Humble. Betty Breland, 71, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the La- Salle Nursing Home of Jena. She was born September 3, 1942 in Lake Arthur to the union of her parents, Eddie and Ezora Pete LaBauve.
Mrs. Breland was a homemaker. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, at the First Baptist Church in Jena with the Revs. Mickey Bounds Dominick DiCarlo officiating. Interment followed in the Magnolia Cemetery in the Magnolia Community south of Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jimmy LaBauve. Survivors include her  husband, C. W. Breland of
Jena; two sons, Bill Breland and wife Susie of Jena, and Dennis Breland of Shreveport;  two sisters, Hazel Bearb of Church Point and Edith Bergeron of Sulphur; four brothers, Willie LaBauve of New Iberia, Milton LaBauve
of Lake Arthur, Raymond La- Bauve of Texas, and Wilford LaBauve of Lake Arthur; and six grandchildren.

She was born on September 19, 1938 at Bevins, Texas, to the union of her parents, the late Virgil Taylor McDuff and Bernice Wall McDuff. Peggy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Olla. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Friday, April 11, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Chaplain Clyde Grammon officiating. Survivors include her husband, L. C. Smith, Jr. of Olla; two sons, Paul Smith of Olla and Ken Smith of Spokane, WA; one daughter, Terry Smith of Austin, TX; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren

Carl Calvin Partin, 62, a resident of Gloster, Mississippi, passed from this life on Monday, April 7, 2014, at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary, LA. He was born August 22, 1951 in Baton Rouge to his parents, Benjamin  Franklin “Ben” Partin and Janie Mae Ebey Partin. Carl was an offshore mechanic with the Cross Barge Company. Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church near Gloster, MS.Interment followed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Jonathan David Partin and Shawna Partin; his brothers and sisters, Douglas Gerald Partin, Seith Partin, Eulone Havard, William Clifford Partin, Charlie Partin, Ruby Havard, Lawrence Partin, and Albert Partin. Survivors include his children, Jason Partin, Joey Partin, Jessica Partin, and Michael Partin, all of Radford, VA; his siblings, Edna Collier, Earnest Partin, Andrew Partin, and Alvin Partin, all of Gloster, MS; his ex-wife, Louise Partin of Olla; his step-children, Mike Robbins and James Robbins, both of Jena, and Patsy Robbins of Olla.

Joe Morgan Holloway

Joe Morgan Holloway, Sr., 81, of Harrisonburg, passed from this life on Friday, April 11, 2014. He was born March 3, 1933 to the union of his parents, Ralph L. Holloway and Myrtle L. Holloway. Mr. Joe graduated from
Pioneer High School in Chickasha, OK. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict on the USS Hancock Aircraft Carrier. He served as superintendent of Harrisonburg utilities as well as an alderman in Harrisonburg for 25 years, and retired from Terry, Inc. after working for many years. He loved to garden, hunt and most of all, he loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. 
Mr. Joe was a member, Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Bird’s Creek Baptist Church, located on LA 8 just west of Harrisonburg. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 14, at Bird’s Creek Baptist Church
with the Revs. Reid Terry and Robert Bradley officiating. Interment followed in the Spring Ridge Cemetery near Aimwell under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Ruby Mae Watkins. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bettye Jean Allbritton Holloway of Harrisonburg; three sons, Joe Morgan Holloway, Charles MarkHolloway, and Tracy Ken Holloway and wife Robbie, all of
Harrisonburg; brother, Lester B. Holloway and wife DeEtta of Stillwater, OK; two sisters, Pearl Todd of Tulsa, OK, and Vera Meeks of Moore, OK; grandchildren, Brent Wiggins, Erin Holloway, Chad Holloway and wife Joni, Sommer Simmons and husband D. Sarah Vanoil Simmons Adams

Sarah Vanoil Simmons Adams, 92, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. She was born on January  29, 1922 to the union of Iley and Rosa Sikes Simmons, and was the oldest of ten children born to the couple. Mrs. Adams spent her early life near the town of Sikes in Winn Parish and was a graduate of Sikes High  School, where she played basketball and was a lifelong supporter of all sports. Along with her sister, Earlene, she sang in the gospel quartet known as the “Sikes Girls Quartet” and the group sang all across the southern United States. The family gathered around the
radio to hear the group sing from Dallas. At the time of her death, Mrs. Adams was the last surviving member of the group. She also attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. She married the love of her life, Thomas Adams in 1941 and the couple enjoyed 57 years of marriage until his death in 1998. The couple moved around a little in the early years, but settled in Jena in 1953. The family vacation became an annual event, and the couple instilled in their children a love to travel. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and in her later years, worked at Carpenter’s Department Store and Don’s Menswear. She had a love for working in her yard and in the 1960’s and 1970’s she was known for her rose garden. She would graciously give flowers to the Town of Jena for bouquets for special occasions, as well as formany weddings. A graveside service was held at the Jena Cemetery,  east of Jena, at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, with Rev. Nick Andrews officiating. Interment followed under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Cois Simmons, DeVane Simmons, and Frank Simmons; and a sister, Earlene Barlow. Survivors include two sons, Donnie Adams and wife Patricia and Mike Adams, all of Jena; one daughter, Marsha  Adams of Jena; a grandson, Jason Adams and wife  LaRea of Byram, MS; one granddaughter, Jessalynn Andrews and husband Nick of Sterlington; four great grandchildren; two brothers, LaVance Simmons of Lumberton, NC, and Gene Simmons of West Monroe; three sisters, Mary Thames of West Monroe, Annette Rankin of Pride, and Linda Bowman of Shreveport; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was born December 21, 1932 in Summerville to the union of James Isaac and Eula Vell Green Poole. Mrs. Westbrooks was a homemaker. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Willie Beaubouef officiating. Interment followed in the Jena Cemetery east of Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Isaac Westbrooks. She is survived by a sister, Helen Cleo Parker of Winnfield. Pallbearers were Eli Cooper, Dustin Parker, Shadow Parker, and Dylan Parker.

Reuben William Trussell, 75, of Jena, passed from this life on Friday, April 18, 2014, at LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was born November 16, 1938, in Ruston, to the union of his parents, George Reuben and Lurline Shaw Trussell. Reuben was retired from the United States Air Force, and was employed by Walmart for 26 years. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Dominick DiCarlo officiating. Interment followed in the Pollock Cemetery at Pollock under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include his wife, Martha Phillips Trussell of Jena; daughter, Trudy Goode of Houma; son, George Lee Trussell of Houma; sisters, Diane Winningham of Shreveport and Sally Wilson of Jena; brothers, Gale Trussell of Alexandria, and Conn Trussell of Houston, TX; and grandson, Nickolas W. Goode. Pallbearers were Jeremy Wilson, Greg Wilbanks, Gary Wilbanks, Walter Young, Jimmy Skinner and Eddie Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Phillips, Jay Winningham, Dale Trussell, Connie Trussell, Bruce Wilson, Lamar Hodges, and all the Trussell cousins.

Hallie B. Sims, 99, of Olla, passed from this life on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Haven Nursing Center in Columbia Heights. She was born October 10, 1914 in Catahoula Parish to the union of her parents, J. I. and Ludie Stringer Blake. Mrs. Sims was a homemaker and was a member of Olla First Baptist Church for 80 years where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also active in the Pinewood Garden Club, WMU, and the LaSalle Home Demonstration Club. She was involved in arts and crafts and was an avid quilter. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 21, at First Baptist Church of Olla with the Revs. Johnnie Phillips and Eddie Riley officiating. Interment followed in the Olla Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. E. “Major” Sims; son, Blake Sims; her parents; and a brother, J. D. “Buddy” Blake. Survivors include one daughter, Sue S. Winberry and husband Kenneth of Olla; sister, Gwen B. Armistead of Moss Bluff, LA; daughter-in-law, Ann Sims of Olla; grandchildren, Joel Sims and wife Jackie, and Kristy Curry and husband Kelly; great-grandchildren, Josh Sims, Hunter Sims, Macie Rogers and husband Quin, Kelsey Curry, and Kendall Curry; one great grandson, Brady Rogers; and a special nephew, Gilbert Sims. George Terry “Bo” Mannon, 74, of Harrisonburg, passed from this life on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at the Columns Community Care Center in Jonesville. He was born March 1, 1940 in Truman, Arkansas, to the union of his parents, James Louisaac and RuthLee Bell Gann Mannon. Bo was a machine operator in the farming business. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 17, at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Harrisonburg with the Revs. Lanny Head and Bobby Rodrigue officiating. Interment followed in the Providence Memorial Park Cemetery in Gilbert under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Jake (J.L.) Mannon, Mae Mannon Miller, James Matthew Mannon, Edward Lee (Cotton) Mannon, Audrey Lavanda Mannon Grant, Alice Lavada Mannon Perkins and Virginia Pauline Mannon. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Baker Mannon of Harrisonburg; two sons, Jim Randall Mannon of Brookhaven, MS, and Jonathan Mannon of Bowie, Maryland; one brother, Billy Mannon of Jena; and four grandsons. She was born December 31, 1928 in Manifest to the union of Walter Ebenezer and Mary Penny Phillips Weeks. Mrs. Lea was a Certified Nursing Assistant. Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at Wallace Ridge Pentecostal Church in the Wallace Ridge Community with the Revs. Todd Tucker and David Poole officiating. Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd R. Lea; her parents; a brother, John Weeks; and grandsons, Bobby Reid and Christopher Lea. Survivors include three daughters, Ann Dingles, Linda Mason Pittman and Ludie Hawthorne, all of Harrisonburg; three sons, Ray Lea of Enterprise, David Lea of Harrisonburg, and Lloyd Lea, Jr. of Jonesville; two sisters, Laura Nettles of McComb, MS and Lorriane Weeks of Harrisonburg; three brothers, Tollie Weeks and Jessie Weeks, both of Harrisonburg, and James Weeks of Jonesville; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Stephen Roy Eberwein, Sr

Stephen Roy Eberwein, Sr., 70, passed from this life on Thursday, April 17, 2014, with his loving wife by his side. He was born January 9, 1944, in Nebo, to Nina Laverne Bradford. He was raised and preceded in death by Harvey “Dado” and Cindy Bradford. Stevie Roy was an avid fisherman who loved being outdoors and shared that love with his children. He accepted the Lord and was baptized at Crossway Family Worship Center in Jonesville. A memorial service was held at Crossway Family Worship Center on Friday, April 18. Survivors include his loving wife, Ellen Eberwein of Nebo; his son, Stephen R. Eberwein, Jr. of Nebo; daughters, Stephanie Eberwein of Ashdown, AR, and Raylee Eberwein of Nebo; and a brother, Billy Don Hailey of Lakeland, TN.

David A. “Coley” Crooks

David Alcie “Coley” Crooks, 91, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at his residence. He was born July 23, 1922 in Archie to the union of Elias and Ellen Reeves Crooks. He was the youngest of ten children that all preceded him in death. Coley, as he was best known, was an oilfield worker in his younger years and was employed by the State of Louisiana, where he retired at the age of 68. He was then elected as Police Juror for Ward Six and served four consecutive terms. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tending to his cattle, but most of all his family. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 19, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Jimmy Keene officiating. Interment immediately followed at Woodland Cemetery east of Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. Mr. Coley was laid to rest along side his wife, Mary Lee Andrews Crooks. Survivors include his son, Mike Crooks and wife Gail; granddaughters, Kim and Shelly, along with their husbands, Brad O’Quinn and Lesley King; and three great grandsons, Ty Cooper, Alex King and Brody King. Pallbearers were Buster Breithaupt, Lloyd Breithaupt, Steve Andrews, Keith Andrews, Muchie Toler and Kaylon Randall. Honorary pallbearers were his great grandsons – Ty Cooper, Alex King, and Brody King.

Reuben William Trussell, 75, of Jena, passed from this life on Friday, April 18, 2014, at LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was born November 16, 1938, in Ruston, to the union of his parents, George Reuben and Lurline Shaw Trussell. Reuben was retired from the United States Air Force, and was employed by Walmart for 26 years. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with
Rev. Dominick DiCarlo officiating. Interment followed in the Pollock Cemetery at Pollock under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include his wife, Martha Phillips Trussell of Jena; daughter, Trudy Goode of Houma; son, George Lee Trussell of Houma; sisters, Diane Winningham of Shreveport and Sally Wilson of Jena; brothers, Gale Trussell of Alexandria,and Conn Trussell  of Houston, TX; and grandson,
Nicholas W. Goode. Pallbearers were Jeremy Wilson, Greg Wilbanks, Gary Wilbanks, Walter Young, Jimmy Skinner and Eddie Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Phillips, Jay Winningham, Gale Trussell, Connie Trussell, Bruce Wilson, Lamar Hodges, and all the Trussell cousins.
