Daniel Alden Creel, 96, of Enterprise, affectionately known as ”Professor” or “Fessor”, went safely into the arms of Jesus, July 07, 2020, in the comfort of his own home surrounded by loved ones.
He was born March 27, 1924, in Manifest, to the union of his parents, Albert L. and Phronie Massey Creel.
As a young man, Alden graduated from Manifest High School. Then as times would have it, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was involved in the “Battle of the Bulge” as U.S. forces captured the critical remaining Remagen Bridge across the Rhine River in Germany.
It was here he was wounded in the peril of battle for his country during the closing weeks of WWII. He was truly a great American hero as he fought for the freedoms of this nation that we enjoy today.
After returning home from the battlefield, he began his higher education first attending Northeast Jr. College in Monroe, La., which is now known as ULM. He then continued his college career in Lafayette, at University of Southwestern Louisiana now known as ULL. It was here that he met the love of his life, Vyriee Sandidge, at the Minnie Pearl Show. They later married and a legacy of love began that would last for over 70 years.
Upon graduating, he began his teaching career in Kilbourne. Soon a son was born, and within a year, another son was welcomed. They returned to Catahoula Parish where he would embark upon a journey of education at Enterprise High School touching and influencing many lives. Nine years later, a daughter was born.
The family moved from the banks of the Ouachita River to the heights of Enterprise, which became known as Creel Hill where he resided until his death. Throughout his career, the “Professor” wore many hats. He taught agriculture, sciences, shop, and was also in charge of the meat processing plant. He was also the unofficial vet, often called out to doctor and vaccinate cattle and other animals.
He was the leader of the FFA chapter at EHS taking many students to Kansas City for national conventions and also state conferences in Bunkie, as well. Through this organization, many students learned parliamentary law and many other leadership skills. After 33 years, he retired from Catahoula Parish School System.
He was later offered the opportunity during his retirement to fill in at Larto High School. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there as he spoke of it lovingly. After hanging up his teaching hat again, he spent his time on Creel Hill growing potatoes each year sharing his bounty with the community. He may be most fondly remembered for raising cane, sugar cane that is. He enjoyed giving out sugarcane to boys and girls on Halloween making it a favorite stop of which many fondly remember to this day.
Through the years, he served as deacon from 1962 to present time at New Ouachita Baptist Church. He raised his family in a Christian home where he and his wife lived out the example of love and commitment. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and grandchildren. He leaves a legacy of love, wisdom, and humor to all who knew him.
He truly was a great American HERO, a member of the greatest generation.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10, at New Ouachita Baptist Church of Enterprise with Brothers James King and John Ed Bartmess officiating.
