Douglas Nelson Hopkins

Douglas Nelson “Hopper” Hopkins, 53, of Stanton, Texas, and a native of LaSalle Parish, went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2015. The Lord called him home from his favorite place, Ruidoso, New Mexico. He was born August 10, 1961 in Jena to the union of his parents, Carlton Douglas “Dugan” Hopkins and Linda Nelson Hopkins. His family moved to Crane, TX in 1971 where he attended school until his junior year. He then moved to Midland, TX where he graduated from Midland Lee High School in 1979. Doug attended Midland College, Texas Tech University and Angelo State University where he graduated in 1984. His first day there he met his love and wife, Carrie Lynn York. They were married in 1989. Doug worked in the oilfield from age 16, off and on, and was employed by Nova Star, LP, at the time of his death. Doug never met a stranger and had friends throughout the country. He helped anyone in need. He was a devoted and loving husband, dad, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was an avid nature lover, who enjoyed being in the beautiful mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. He inherited his love of traveling the roads of America from his Mom and Pawpaw Nelson. He followed the weather and was always fascinated by it. Boxing was his passion, and he was an expert on it. He loved life and woke up joyously singing every morning. He attended Homeline Baptist Church in Midland. Services were held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 29 at Temple Baptist Church in Midland with Rev. Rob Foreman officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland under direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Steve Holifield, Jr.; a niece, Hunter Ann Smith; and his grandparents, Elemena and Sam Hopkins, Joy and Dave Nelson. Survivors include his wife, Carrie Hopkins; son, Samuel Hopkins; daughter, Sarah Hopkins, all of Stanton; his parents, Carlton Douglas Hopkins and Linda Nelson Hopkins of Midland; sister, Lisa Holifield of Midland; sister, Jane Smith and husband Craig of Midland; many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he loved dearly.
