James Conrad Amberg, 83, of Georgetown, passed from this life on February 27, 2021 at his home in Georgetown with his wife and son at his bedside. He had waged a 20 plus year battle with leukemia.
He was born August 22, 1937 to the union of John Christian Amberg and Annie Mae Gaar.
Jim was born on land homesteaded by his grandmother in what is now the Kisatchie National Forest. He was second generation born in the country. His grandfather had immigrated from Switzerland in the late 1800’s.
He attended Georgetown High School and was a graduate of Louisiana Tech with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy and Animal Husbandry. While in high school, Jim was named An American Farmer. A highlight of his high school years was a train trip from Georgetown to Kansas City, MO where he was presented his award by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Jim loved the outdoors. He spent much of his time raising cattle and hay as well as some of the very best vegetable gardens. Hunting was his favorite pastime. He especially loved his annual trip to hunt mule deer, antelope and elk with his best friend Sam Verplancke on the Snowy Range in Wyoming. He also enjoyed hunting on his ranch in the Texas Hill Country.
Jim was a proud veteran who served in the 103rd Engineering Company of the Fifth Army. Upon completion of his military service he returned to work in his family trucking business until health issues forced him to retire.
A graveside service was held on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Starks Cemetery with Rev. Mark Breland officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda Holmes Caraway; his son and namesake, James Conrad “Jay” Amberg, II; his sisters, Frances Perego of Shreveport, Mildred Harter (Bobby) of Olla, and Cheerie Jackson (Paul) of Sulfur; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers were Mike Kelly, Steve Gaar, Geoff Perego, John Harter, Bill Riggs and Paul Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were Felder Hollenshead, Ken Winberry, Monty Atkins, LeVie Vidrine and members of the Tullos “Lunch Bunch”.
Jim lived a full life. He loved his family, his fellowman and his God. He will be missed. Rest in Peace.
