
Gary Wayne Michou, 67, of Jena, and formerly of Eagle River, Alaska, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.
He was born on September 24, 1952 in Anchorage, Territorial Alaska to Lawrence “Tex” and Evelyn Michou. He married Cindy Erkel on June 26, 1976 in Anchorage.
Gary graduated from Anchorage West High School in 1970. He attended Denver Diesel and Automotive School. After graduating, he followed his father by joining the International Operating Engineers, Local 302 in 1974. He began his career working on equipment used to construct the Trans Alaska Pipeline rapidly completing his apprenticeship.
He returned to Anchorage and worked for Sea Land and then Anchorage Sand and Gravel. He retired from AS&G after 27 years as Shop Superintendent. Gary took great pride of achieving the rank of Master Mechanic and teaching young mechanics the complexities of heavy construction equipment.
After retirement, Gary discovered another talent, wood working. He found great satisfaction in working with exotic woods to create beautiful bowls and intarsia figures. His family and friends will cherish the art pieces Gary created for them.
After 59 years in Alaska, Gary and Cindy relocated to Jena, Louisiana in 2012 to be near family.
He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Cindy; sons, Greg Michou and Robert Michou; brothers, Larry (Linda) Michou, and David (Mitzie) Michou; sister, Linda (Will) Butler; three nieces and three nephews. Gary was much loved by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Arrangements are entrusted to Gallagher Funeral Home and Crematory, Ball, Louisiana. Cremation rites have been accorded. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials in Gary’s name may be made to a local food bank or soup kitchen.
