Johnnie I. Evans, 85, of Harrisonburg, passed from this life on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. He was born July 16, 1932 in Harrisonburg to the union of his parents, George William Evans and Lillie Ford Evans. Johnnie served his country in the U.S. Air Force and then continued on as a government contractor until he was 32 years of age. Between working for Bruton’s Butane and Southern LP Gas, he ran an electrical contracting business with his brother Vernon. He also ran a paper route for the Alexandria Town Talk. Johnnie was recently known as a “Matchmaker” or “Cupid”, who connected at least four couples. He spent most of his days driving his red truck around visiting with friends and family. He ate cheeseburgers daily from either the Snack Shack, Jerry’s or Big John’s, because he said, “It was everything that you needed; vegetables, meat and bread.” He always had a special place in his heart for hurting children and their families. Memorial services were held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Jonesville First Baptist Church with Keith Abbott and Jack Colclasure officiating. Arrangements were handled by Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy “Dot” Young Evans; four brothers, Pete Evans, Joe Evans, Vernon Evans, and Jack Evans; two sisters, Doris Womack Willis, and Georgie Lee; and one infant grandson, Luke Davis. He is survived by his three daughters, Janet Davis and husband Michael of Jonesville, Mary Spann and husband Johnnie of Monterey, and Cynthia “Cindi” Abbott and husband Keith of Cedar Park, TX; one brother, C.F. Evans of Pineville; two sisters, Louise Stevens of Natchez and Mary Sue Flacey and husband Robert of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Evan Davis and wife Emily, Taylor Spann Winborne and husband Justin, Jeffrey Spann, Ethan Abbott, Zane Davis, and Austin Abbott; two step-children, Jeannie Spann and Christopher Spann; four great grandchildren, Bryson Smith, Bailey Davis, Layla Cruz, and Elijah Cruz; special cousin, June Poole; and special friend, Barbara Karger. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special family and friends. The family is requesting memorial donations be made to The Ronald McDonald House of South Louisiana.
